Welded the Rear 3rd Last night
After work yesterday, Vince and started with his big truggie and welded his rear diff. Mine is getting done today afterwork. I've welded them before on 60s but found the yota 3rd easy to get to.
Pics will go up tonight of both rigs. I don't know if this has been covered but I'll try and detail the pics with some tech on how I did it.
Welded in 8 spots on the spiders. 4 on one side, 4 on the other.
1.) Jack the rear end up
2.) Pull the tires
3.) disconnect on side of the brake line from drum and all attached brake mounts on the axle so the brake line can slide with the axle without having to detach both sides. (Of course, you can just disconnect both brake lines at the drums also
4.) Remove the 4 bolts on the back side of each drum. No need to remove the drum though.
5.) Slide the axle shafts out about 8 inches each
6.) Unbolt the 3rd, driveshaft
7.) Beat the 3rd into submission to get it off (just kidding, but does take finesse)
8.) Wash the 3rd in parts cleaner to remove all residue and let it dry
9.) Soak or spray the 3rd with Weld Clean in order to keep any splatter from sticking to your ring gear, etc. (Weld Clean is like Pam for Welders)
10.) Align the spiders so the gaps on each side are even
11.) Weld them using 4 welds on each side, rotate the carrier so it exposes the other side and repeat.
12.) Let it cool, reassemble making SURE you inspect the entire carrier for splatter (Again, use weld clean and nothing will stick)
I used the following settings on my MIG. 18 for power and 175 (IPM) for line speed.
You dont' want to use too much heat, just enuff to get the job done.
I'll post some pics later today and add them to this post.

Hey guys,
Good tip on the axle shafts. I did put jack stands under the drums, but inspecting the axles is always a good idea when down that far.
I've had a welded diff in before and it's definately not a good idea in the winter and only gonna run this way thru the summer. I do tow it on the longer runs.
No BBQ on this one, but you just made me hungry! Pics coming soon. We did 2 in 2 days and headed out wheeling next Friday.
