a buddy of mine was letting me use the transmission shop where he worked. out of all the snap ring pliers in the shop:
http://buy1.snapon.com/catalog/item....re&dir=catalog
that was by far the best pair. made those little snap rings a breeze.

Sorry but I have some dumb questions.
I am considering doing this as well. Actually I fully plan on it. Anyway, 2.8 is pretty low as far as moving through quick sections. I hate to swap back and forth from low to hi all the time (I hate stopping), so I will usually start in 2nd as it is close feeling to 1:1 first gear. Which gear would feel like that in 1:4.7 LOW?
Do you think I would miss my 2.8:1 for any reason?
The nos stalling, no burning clutch thing sounds real good. Is it possible to stall in 4.7 low 1st gear? I remember reading that it was impossible in some gearing, but I think that was on a dual case setup.
Thanks for the answers to my dumb questions.

I'm not sure if I am reading this correctly, but I think you are asking about the 4.7:1 vs the stock 2.8:1 gearing and how it would affect youre driving. Here is a link to Marlins calculator for the gearing. Basically the 4.7 gears are (almost) half the speed of the 2.8.

I have heard of some people that didnt like the low gears in the sand and high speed areas. So if you like the dune running and high speed stuff, they may not be for you.
I'm not sure if I explained this right or not. Hopefully the calculator will answer youre questions.

Thanks seaflea,
my rig does see both areas, but I never even drop down to low as it is in the dunes.
I guess I was just wondering if anyone had experience with the 4.7 gearset and a 223ewould be able to tell me what a "normal" starting gear for flat ground would be.
For instance when I am in 2.8 low and going through an easy section, rather t5han switching to high 1st gear, I will start in low 2nd and cruise in lwo 3rd 4th and 5th.
I was just wondering if in 4.7 low I would have to treat 4th or even 5th gear like this. If so, I wouldn't be able to cruise to fast in low range and that would mean that I am constantly having to stop to shift the little lever, which would kinda suck on the trail.
My second question was basically asking if 1st gear low would be too low to stall.

Stock gear drive cases are 2.28. A 4.7 case gives you twice the gearing or half the speed at the same throttle.
It makes no sense to me to have 4.7's and a rig that should go fast. The two do not go hand in hand.
I have 2.28, 4.7 and 10.72. I use all of them. 2.28 getting to trails heads, 4.7 for most crawling and 10.72 for the hard stuff.

When you go fast you are in 1:1, so your low range doesn't matter at all.
I guess what I am asking is what gears in 4.7 would act as the gears in 2.28?
In other words, when I am on a trail that feels comfortable now in 2.28, what gear in 4.7 would feel fine?
I'd rather not run a dual case setup right now. Thanks -Seth

Finished
OK. I am finally finished with the rebuild of the T-Case. Thanks to Marlin who helped me out with an output bearing that I needed. It is all together and ready for install to the rig. I will start a new thread next week on that. I will be replacing the transmission and t-case.

i would definitely go for the dual cases in your situation.
however, if you are hellbent on a gearset, consider a 4.0 gearset.

Stock low first would be whatever gear is half of first with 4.7's.
This is the reason people go duals. I still have stock low, twice stock low and thrice stock low. At any point I can choose low or up to three times low plus 2 or 4 wheel drive since I have a twin stick.

I understand the point of a dual case setup, I just can't afford that right now and I don't do a ton of crawling. I was hoping I could get a gearset that would be lower but still cruisable. I've never used 5th gear low and rarely see 4th low, so I thought a 4.7 kit might shift it so that 4.7 3rd would feel like 2.8 1st.
I'm trying to decide if the money for twinstick is worth it. It's only 200.00 from Marlin, but When would I use 2WD Low?

I use 2wd low to turn tight or to hlimb hills on approach roads in Arizona.
Again, I would not waste my time on 4.7's unless there was a lot of pure crawling on your agenda.
