Difference In Tundra Engines

I am basically just wondering what the difference is in the engine of the '05 & '06 model Tundras to give them a 40ish horsepower increase. Any help is appreciated; thanks.

BTW if you are looking to purchase a Tundra, I have driven both the 05 and 06 and the difference was not that much. The engines are SOOO smooth and quiet. No shift shock. Although I didn't get to floor it on the test drive

Wait for the new 5.7l V-8... almost 400 horse and 403 ft-lbs... What more can you ask for. Any only Toyota would still make it a quad-cam!!! Can't wait to drive one with the new 6 speed auto!

For the 2006 i dont know, but i know the new 4.7 and 5.7 both come vvti...

vvti came out on the 1uz in 1998, so I imagine it has been on the 2uz since the start. could be wrong though.

dibble9012-I know that the '05 & '06 have the same numbers. I was asking what was the difference in them and the earlier one's ('04 and older). I will check out tundrasolutions, thanks for the link.

TRDatVT-I feel you on the new Tundra; but I'm pretty sure I won't find one for under 10g's. I have seen some around 8g's too. At that price, I can supercharge it and have the same power for way less than half the price; probably more like a quarter the cost.

Thanks for the other replies. I'll try to do some more research and see what I can come up with.

I believe it is VVTI, it was not on the older 2UZ, but was added in the last few years.

i thought the new tundra 5.7 was pushrod to qualify for nascar specs?

I know the VVTI came out on the sequoia in 05. not sure about the Tundra.

The new 5.7 is definitely DOHC... Also, to run the supercharger on the older motor to have the same power might be cheaper, but i would definitely have the power all motor knowing that it would be running with corvette ZO6's with some serious tuning. I really want the tundra to come out with a 4-5 liter turbo deisel... just not sure if it would apply to the market. The new tundra also looks a lot better IMO but i guess that a person preference... It wont be available for a little while i think.

New Tundra available just after Vaentines Day , though it'll probably have some crazy dealer mark up for a while.

From what I have seen at tundrasolutions, the VVTI seems to be the difference.

TRDatVT-I understand the wanting of N/A horsepower. But if you ain't got it already, power adders are the way to get it. I'm still not positive about the new Tundra. There are things I like, and some things that I don't. I like them more with a painted grill surround; rather than the chrome though. Obviously the horsepower and torque increase is a big draw. But I never really liked true fullsize trucks. I drive a '94 Toyota Pickup; definately not a big vehicle. Looking at something for daily driving, some towing of the pu when it becomes an off-road only vehicle, and some other mods (s/c, headers, brake upgrade, sound system, etc.). Thanks for the help fellas. Let me know how some of the new Tundras do when ya'll get one. later

I think your talking about the V6 engines. The 04' 3.4 engines are rated at 190 H.P. The 05' and up are 4.0 engines with VVTI. and are rated at 236-240 H.P(Depending on which mag. you read) I'm sure the VVTI has a lot to do with the increase in power but it is a bigger displacement engine which also helps. I bought a 04' Tundra 2wh. dr. auto 3.4 for my work. I love the truck but I kick my self for not waiting the 6-8 months for the 05' with the new engine.

Right, VVT-i intake side only. The new 5.7L has dual VVT-i.

Portland Region dealers no longer have additional dealer markup.

05 was the first model year on the tundra with the vvti engine which resulted in a modest increase in hp. I can tell you that the way the power comes on is very different than with the earlier engine. If you look at the chart for the new 5.7 with dual vvt it has over 300lb ft of tq off idle and goes up from there.

Yea, I've seen those numbers. They are very impressive. Now I'm just waiting on the numbers that are gonna scare the ˟˟˟˟e outta me; the price!!!

I don't know if anyone had ever seen or was interested in the concept Tacoma with the 4.7 liter V8; if you were, they ain't gonna make it. I talked to the guy at the International Motorcycle Show in D.C. (Toyota is one of the big sponsors). He said that the exzecs at Toyota nixed that idea already. I'm kinda sad about it, I wanted one.

The new Tundra engine is ohc w/vvti. The new nascar engine was built from scratch with pushrods. I read somewhere its 100 lbs. lighter than mopars engine.
