fireteacher -

(when you come to a stop and let off the brake to take off again, does it make a thud for a split second? if so, like i said before, its mostly a case of axle wrap!)

Yes i did notice that today... Whats the best way to get rid of this?

like my 2nd post, mine had the same problem. i searched the forum, was directed to the thread i posted in a previous post (bobs thread in the tech section). Is this a GUARANTEE to fix your problem? i would say 90%, worked for me and many others. could it be something else? YES but need to start with the simple EASY stuff

go to your local auto shop. by a grease gun and the prescribed lube (in that write up) and have at it! also, you should lube these components every 5k miles, so when you change the oil, lube em up!

JUST DO IT!!!

I had this same problem on my 98 when I bought it last year. After searching Yotatech I found the answer was to lube the drivetrain. I lubed my u-joints (all of them) and it went away.
Congrats on your new 4Runner by the way, you'll love it.

If the "knocking" noise happens when you are already moving ,lubing the drive train may not fix it.
Sounds like you experencing a harsh shifting possibly cause by a sticking valves in the valve body in the trans.
I would do a trans flush via flash machine by a reputalble shop that is capable of doing so. This has repaired harsh shifting problems.

ok, I've done lots of reading and found out that there are 2 types of transmission flushes

Cooler Line Flush Machine

Pump Inlet Flush Machine

From my understanding, the Cooler line flush is the worst one to do out of the two. The pump inlet is the best way to flush your tranny. My question is, there is a reputable shop in my area, they specalize in Toyotas/japanese vehicles. The gentleman said that the toyota tranny's are near bulletproof and that he has never had a problem with doing the cooler line flush.

I havent flushed my tranny in about 100K...yea I know, I am irresponsible. My question is, how many people ACTUALLY experienced tranny difficulty. I dont want any, my friends friends, or my babys momma's momma type stories. Thanks in advance.

alright, I just had the cooler line flush done. WOW, what an improvement on shifting. I havent ran into any problems.

FWIW, I just found all the service records, and well, the last time the Tranny was flushed was at 90k. I now have 219k on it...LOL

Tranny flush ftw.

Directions

Sorry for the delayed response. I was on vacation. I'm going to pick up the grease guns and the prescribed lube.. Looks pretty simple from this link -

http://www.4runners.org/articles/zerk/

Is this the correct directions to follow? Please let me know if there is other?

Also it says there is 2 different types of Lube. Which goes where?

thanks!!

Grease to buy?

My manual says -
Propeller shafts:
Spiders
Lithium base chassis grease, NLGI No. 2

Slide yoke an double crdan joint Molybdenum-disulfide lithium base chassis grease, NLGI No. 2.

So is there 2 differnt types of grease i need to buy for this project.
In the photos for the instructions on "Lubing your driveshaft" it does not show which type of greast goes into which zerk (or place the grease goes into)

thanks!!

I use Amsoil series 2000 grease for every zerk on my rig-- and I have also used Mobil 1 synthetic grease as well. I think as long as it exceeds the factory requirements you are in good shape. Also I can say that you need to do this pretty often, as often as you change your oil in some cases but if you drive in deep water then I would do it again right after.
I can't imagine that anything could be wrong with your rig yet--just not enough miles even if it has been abused. I think you will be happy with the results of getting everything lubed and in tune.
Also, it takes quite a few pumps of the grease gun to fill up the sliding yokes if they are bone dry. The worst that can happen is that the excess will squeeze out and either sling off onto your undercarriage as you drive or into a glob on the garage floor.

got a grease gun

ok only questions are the very rear there was 2 grease fittings. And in the instructions it says in the front rear there are 3 grease fittings. I could only find 2 after roatating the it several times. The 2 i found looked like there were in differnt sports from the online instructions. Perhaps the 02 is not the same as the one for the instructions??

Also all but 2 of the grease fittings made a noise and i couls see grease come out.. 2 of the fittings.. One in the front and one in the rear never did that. I put about 20 pumps into it. No sign that it was full??

thanks everyone.. Time to wash up and take it for a spin

Just noticed that when i put it in Park or Reverse on the shifter it does not light up. Also when i got to put it in park i really have to push up to get it to lock into place. I think i may of put too much grease in it?

is this bad?

The rear drive shaft moved about an inch and a half after i put grease it in.. It sort of slide up towards the front end of the car.
