Tire history thread

Thought we should have a thread where everyone posts the different tires they've run, size, mileage, how they fit, likes/dislikes/comments etc. We get a lot of questions about running a specific tire & will it fit, and since everyone uses the search this will hopefully answer a lot of those questions. Also, I think it'll be interesting to see if everyone keeps getting bigger and bigger, or if folks find a sweet spot that works for them.

So give it up! Tell us all the tires you've run, what it took to make them work (BL, SL, trimming, gears), how long they lasted and how you like 'em!

I got my 1993 4Runner in 1995 with 14K on it.

OE tires were Goodyear AT/S 31x10.5x15 on 15x7 factory alloys. These lasted to about 35K. They were marginal.

Next set were BF Goodrich All Terrain TA (non KO version) 32x11.5x15 on factory 15x7's. These went from 35K to 80K (45K). Good tire - I even had chunked the sidewall pretty good in a few places and they never let me down. I added PP rear coils to make help these fit.

Nest set were BF Goodrich All Terrain TA KO 32x11.5x15 on factory 15x7's. These went from 80K to 125K (45K). Again these were great, but it was time for a more aggressive tread.

Current set is BF Goodrich Mud Terrain TA KM 33x12.5x15 on MT II's. I have about 9K on them so far. They are holding up very well. No balancing issues and a nice hum (not obnoxious - yet). I added a 1" BL and did some clearancing of the front wheelwells. I will be adding BJ spacers and Cruiser coils before too long...

Think I like BFG's?

I have had 3 sets of Super Swamper SSR in 305/75/16, Not on 4Runner though.
average life span was about 25000 miles, that is if it didnt blow out through a tread seperation (3 did that). Rode great off road, and held their ground. Major pain to balance and keep balanced. Wont buy them again

1 set of 285/75/16 Big O Mud Terrain not on a 4runner and were on the truck when I bought it.
life span about 30,000 miles, very stiff tires offroad and on road.

1 set of ProComp X-terrain tires 305/70/16 not on a 4runner.
life span about 30,000 miles, were very quiet onroad until I got down to ~36% tread, not as comfy off road as the Swampers but way better than the BigOs. Got around in the mud, rocks and sand all right, Swampers were better. These were a good compromise of Road and OffRoad. I would buy them again for that vehicle.

I have only had 2 sets on my 4Runner.

When I bought it with 43,000 miles, it had Dunlop's 265/70/16. Quite possibly the worst tires I have ever driven with.

I bought a set of 265/75/16 Michelin LTX A/T's They fit perfectly without a lift, no rubbing at all. I have put approx 27,000 miles on them and they still look new. They have good wet/dry traction, and can handle light/medium trails. I have taken them on some medium rock climbing and they were ok, but I had to air them down to 20 psi..

Only nice set I have had are the present Yokohama Geolander ATs. I have had them for about 35k miles and they are wearing down fast. I hope to move up 1 or 2 inches for my next tires and a more aggresive tread.

33x12.50 yoko geolanders. purchased 2 months after owning truck, got about 10k on them. no complaints this far, except the fact they're unidirectional, so i carry a wild country rvt 33x12.50 in the back of the truck.

Hey all...New to this forum.

I've had a set of BFG KO(285/75R16) on 02 Tundra and 32x11.5R15 on a 94 4Runner. They work well on the trail but lots of trouble with them on the road. I've had lots of trouble getting balanced. The steering wheel would rock left to right and the intensity of the vibration changes every time I had it rebalanced.

Currently running 285/75R16 on the 02 Tundra and they are the quietest tires I've ever own. Don't know how well they are on the trails yet.

with this truck:

started out with NR78(~31") buckshot radials. they were about 20 years old and pretty worn, lots of dry rot. also, noisier than anything besides maybe a bogger....kind of wierd since they aren't too much more agressive than a BFG. they were pretty hard probably due to age so driving when wet was super scary because they'd slip on everything.

after blowing one of those out and not being able to find a cheap replacement, i put on the set of 235/75R15 uniroyal laredos(i swear, every truck that's survived the '80s has worn a set of these shoes at one time or another). not a bad tire but not the most agressive either. ironically most of the wheeling i've done in this truck so far was on those tires

currently i'm running 31" swamper LTBs. they ran $97 each at 4wheelparts. they have probably the second most agressive swamper tread, right next to boggers. the road performance is great, the soft compound grips the road very well but seems to be wearing quite well. they thump a little in the morning when it's cold and they're a bit loud, but it's a good kind of hum. unbelievable traction off-road, needless to say, my next set of tires will be of the interco variety

Maybe it'd be easier to state vehicle stats before tire stats. If we do indeed get a lot of tire info on this thread it'll be a bear to look for information and hunt for the vehicle specs.

2002 TACOMA DOUBLECAB
at stock height I went from stock 265/70/16 to 265/75/16 BFG Muds and experienced rubbing only at full compression. My suspension settled after a trip and the tires rubbed whenever I pulled up into my driveway with any speed greater than 10 mph.
I also experienced rubbing at full left and right turns. I don't know if a lift would help that unless it projected the part of the tires that was rubbing below where it was rubbing against the frame.

On the old Toyota:

-Started with a set of 30" tall cooper discovery's. They sucked.
-Moved to General grabber AP's, 31x10.5 variety, got them used and on nice rims. Good tire, they wore excellent and did decent off road.
-General grabber MT, 32x11.5. Nice tire, once again wore nice, rode smooth and quiet, but were very bad in snow and rain. Worse than my TSL's
-BFG A/T's, again in the 32x11.5 size. Had these for well over a year, and about 30K miles. Good tire, for an AT i would recomend them
-Interco TSL, Q78-15. Tires measure 36x10.75. Uncompromised off road ability, super tough, and did great in the mud, and rocks.

On the K5, only had 2 sets.

-33x12.2 BFG A/T's.
-Q78 TSL's-now grooved. I daily drive on these tires, and they are fine. They are not that noisy, i can still hear the diesel over them. Handling in adverse weather is just fine, you just have to be a little more careful. They are wearing well, and retain the bead excellent with the 5.5" wide rim. I will never buy a set of tires that doesnt say Interco on the side again.

On the toyota i had no lift at all, i just hacked it up. The K5 has a small, 2" body and 1" susp. from HD springs.

On my 90 sr5 4wd it came with some off-brand tires, plenty of tread, but dried out and tired. replaced them with michelin LTX 235/75/15. No fit problems on my no-lift rig. I was very happy with them for the 2years, 20k I put on them, but was a little disappointed that they seemed to harden after a couple of years and weren't as good in the rain & seemed to hydro-plane more, even though the tread was really close to new. Unfortunately, never got to try them off-road, but they were great on the boatramp.

The 97 has some crap old tires & I'm thinking Revos next.

Here's what I can remember:

1985 4Runner and 1985 PU std cab short bed:
30x9.50 BFG All Terrains - terrible hydroplaners in the rain. Fine otherwise.
32x11.50 Triumph All terrains - bargain brand made by Firestone (this tread pattern no longer made) Excellent tires - I put 50k on them and they still had 30% left. Very little weight required to balance them. Quiet on highway, handled extremely well, as good offroad as any all terrain.
P78R15 Buckshot Mudders, size would compare to 33x11.50. Excellent off-road - I really liked the traction, but very loud off road and wore very quickly. I was doing a lot of long trips so I bought the Firestones and then had two sets of tires.
32x11.50 BFG All Terrains - Did you know they made these in bias-ply? I didn't either until I bought a set. Sold them used in less than 2 months - the highway handling was frightening. Buyer beware. And don't run bias plys on modern rigs designed for radials...
33x12.50 Bronco Mud Terrains (made by Cooper) No complaints with these, they wore out fast and were noisy, but about the same as any other MTs.
30x9.50 Cooper Discoverer all terrain type - fine tire - owned 2 sets of these (another set on a Dodge Raider) and highly recommend them. Nice balance, good handling, long life, great traction for a non-agressive tread, really good in rain, which is why I bought em.
235/75R15 Bridgestone Blizzak. Winter tires. Highly recommended. Excellent traction in the wet and ice & snow. No longer need them - they're for sale, mounted on silver steel factory rims, 90% tread.
33x12.50R15 Wrangler MTR - great grip off road- very good in mud and awesome in everything else, gripped on rocks like suction cups. Longest lasting mud tire I've seen. Noisy on the highway, not that deep noise but more a higher whine. Annoying.

1998 F150: Goodyear Wrangler RS-A 265/70R17 Factory tires. RUN from these! I had 3 of them simply self destruct within 20k miles. They are prone to flats. Always buy LT rated tires, unless you really do only need them Mall Rated. (Other owners experinced the same thing...) They didn't grip at all on road either, which might mean they wear longer? Nope - they wore out completely in less than 40k miles.
Dunlop Radial Rover AT 265/70R17 - Great grip, quiet and smooth. No problems with these. They are wearing fast though, 25% left at 30k miles. Not buying these again either. This heavy truck just needs bigger tires.

1990 Toyota XtraCab 4x4:
37x12.50R15 Swamper SSRs - Unbelievably noisy on road. Didn't handle well either. Worn bald in 20k miles. BUT - unbelievable grip off road. Sticky on the hard surface, unstickable in mud. If you have the luxury of two set of tires these would make a great offroad-only set.
35x12.50R15 BFG Mud Terrains - 15% tread left at 34k miles. Great traction off road, fairly quiet on road. Balanced well. No worries, I'd buy these again. Nearly did buy decided to try the ProComps.
35x12.50R15 ProComp Mud Terrains - still brand new. Quietest mud tires I've ever heard! Great road manners and super off road so far (haven't seen mud yet.) So far I like these a lot.

1992 3.0 4runner running 33" TSL THORNBIRDS...BEST TIRE EVER!!!

Okay, so Im kidding.I just wanted to get a rise out of you guys. I have 31x10.5x15 BIG O Bigfoot A/T's now and they are about done. I wouldn't recommend them for anybody. Im switching to 32" tires and 15x8's black steelies instead of 7's. Probably go with BFG AT KO's. If Revos came in 32's Id consider. thats my 2 cents

I'm running 285/75/16 BFG Muds on my 02 Tacoma and man am I pleased. I love the hum of these tires and they seem to be wearing pretty good for 4k miles so far. My previous set of Dunlops (29") were great on road but got annihilated from a couple trips offroad. The tread design of the BFG Muds lets me have a lot of fun in 2wd in mud since these tires grip really well.

Bridgestone Revo 265/75r16. They came on the 1999 4runner when I bought it. Ive put about 8k on them and they are great. Super quiet on the road, and work well on trails. In the snow you really have to air them down. I would easily buy a 2nd set.
I just wish they made them in bigger sizes. I would love 255/85r16, but i think 285s are the biggests. good thread design too... very cool looking!
