Taurus fan wiring

As mentioned in my other post on the electric fan install, I obtained an electric fan from a later 3.8 Taurus. My question right now is what is the block that the fan wiring harness connects to? The cable runs from the fan to the first connector. The wires are then run into a pair of what look to be narrow silver blocks. both of them along with the wires to them are encased in some sort of epoxy. When I removed the fan from the vehicle I took everything to about a foot past this block. So my question is, what are they, what do they do and do I really need them for my install?

You can see the block I am referring to in the picture. It is at the top of the fan. If you follow the wiring harness, you can see the mount just above the top of the fan. I will try to take a closeup of it so maybe we can figure out what it really is. thanks everyone!

Yeah, closeup would be nice, but really all you need is at least a few inches (a foot would be nice) of pigtail of the motor wiring to splice to. If you have a plug too thats even better, makes for easier removal later.

Lots of write ups on installing the Taurus fan. Bamachem had one that was good and used a nice variable speed fan controller.

Yeah Bamachem's writeup WAS good until he pulled all his pics. The DCC controller is the best way to go if you can afford it: http://www.dccontrol.com/0820.htm

Thanks Wabbit, but he did a single speed Volvo fan with the variable controller. I did check that write up. I looked for a Volvo fan, but could not find anything. I even considered the dual fan from a 2001 Nissan Z but the Yard wanted $250 and the frame was broken in one spot. Nah, I'll just find a $25 Ford fan! I had considered the variable control when I started this mod on my gen 3, but the cost was the stopper for me. I did the Taurus fan mod on my Gen 2 but the radiator is much smaller and the footprint of the older Taurus fan was easier to mount as it actually had two mount holes that llined up on the Gen 2 radiator. The fan on the Gen 3 is way bigger! No way I was gonna be able to do this as easily as I did my Gen 2.

I did not see this block on the earlier Taurus fan that I installed on my Gen 2 and while I was in the Yard looking for parts came across this Taurus fan off a '97. The shroud is a bit different on the '97 then on the '93 fans. I just don't want to NOT use something that might be needed. Wanted to ask the questions first them start cutting and splicing. I learned along time ago in the Submarine Service, 'The only stupid question is the one you don't ask.'

Dale, I'll get that pic later this afternoon as I am sure someone here will know what it really is used for. Just seems weird that there is this relay looking thing that the fan plugs into but nothing for it besides the 3 wires coming from the fan (Hi, Lo & GND) and 3 wires out. Hmmmm
