It took like 6 hours to complete the mod since I replaced my hoses and thermostat with a 180* one (it had a 192* thermostat). I also removed the radiator completely to install the fan, and fried my old fan controller and had to wire in a new one. I also changed my oil that day. So I was pretty busy doing more than the fan install.

Nice work. Great alternative to the $200 FAL option!

Well, I'm going to Florida on vacation, and I found out today when getting the Motorvac Carbon Depletion service done that my current stock fan is cracked which causes it to make weird noises at WOT. So, that's why I have to do it. I've found two junk yards that have it, or at least they say they do, and they want than what you paid for it. I guess I'll have to offer them less and hope they take it. It looks like all the rest of the parts can be found at my local auto parts place, right?

Chris

P.S. I'll be putting it on my 1997 4Runner with the 3.4 liter V6. I'm probably going to go ahead and do the faster speed since I'm S/C'd and won't be running the TRD Thermostat this time around. I didn't like the gas mileage decrease I go from it.

Gotta have some pics when you put that on the 3.4L....
A little writeup would be nice too.

Seafarinman:

Well now you've done it: you added another mod to my list. I read thru the ford article and i especially like the part about 1 to 2 mpg increase. Gas is too expensive here in L.A.

You think there's anything negative with going with the higher speed?

Chris

P.S. I'll take pics and doa short writeup if I can even find the right thing. I've heard that both are using a fan out of a 95 Sable.

I f a read it correctly, the mustang page you gave us says that if you go to the high speed, an alternater upgrade is necessary. What do you guys think? Would the low speed be fine, and if I used the high speed, do you think I'll need to get a stronger alternator?

I have just the low speed hooked up for now. I am planning on getting the 85A relay and I have a DPDT switch to switch the fan output to another 40A relay for the low speed and the 85A relay for the high speed, with OFF in the center (for water crossings, etc) I think that the hight speed will work with the stock alternator of you were to switch it to high from low when it is already running. The article did say that the 100A current draw is only for milliseconds when first starting the high speed circuit after all. I seriously doubt that would really drain the charging system. Besides I would run low most of the time and only switch to high for emergency situations.

Where does one get a DPDT switch and find out how to wire it correctly?

By the way, did you wire it like they did on that other mustang page where it kicks on around 200 degrees, which is about 20 degrees higher than the TRD thermostat, or did you hook it up differently? Is there a best way, because the way they did it sounds pretty good for gas mileage and power purposes, since it will probably just kick on when you aren't traveling at a higher rate of speed, because of the wind.

Now see, what you NEED to day is get a few of these things from the junk yard, a few sets of the parts needed, print outs of the write-up and put this bad boy on ebay. Do it quick before some !@#$@$ picks up on it and auctions it as a 4runner turbo kit.

Ravencr,
I haven't taken electronics since high school, but I understand a little bit:
A DPDT switch is a toggle with a ON-OFF-ON function. They have them at Radio Shack. Basically, you connect the output of the thermostat fan control (to drive the fan) to the center position on the switch, and connect the end terminals on opposite sides to another relay to actuate it. This is the electromagnetic trigger that closes the internal switch(86 to 85 which is the ground) between the fused +12V from the battery (30) and finally to the "low" input wire on the fan. The other side of the switch goes to the trigger (86) on the 85A relay(for high speed) and ground the other small terminal (85) and then again the fused +12V from the battery (30) and connect the remaining terminal (87) to the fan "high" input wire. Therefore in one switch position you trigger the low and the other position, you connect the high, with OFF in the center.
Here is a little background info on the relays:

Wow, in english please. Just kidding, but electrical is scary to me. It looks like I've got some reading to do to understand all this. Thanks a lot for the help on this.

Looks great, a perfect fit. Do you know how many amps the fan draws? It seems the guys on the PBB say that fan draws a bunch. Does the engine speed drop when it comes on. I installed an aftermarket electric fan on my 93 truck and the headlights actually dimmed when the fan came on. I would like to do this mode to mine as long as the amp draw isn't significant. Thanks

Since I only have the low speed setting connected right now, the current draw is minimal. For the high speed setting it is said to draw 100A on startup(for a couple milliseconds) then it settles to 40A afterwards. I am using the original 25A fuse in the fan controller output lead, so the low speed current draw is manageable.

Hey Chris-

If you change your mind on this and need a stock fan, I have 2 of them. Let me know.

96 runner,

How cheap could I pick it up? All I need is the fan blade. Cheap, cheap, because I don't have time right now to do it before my trip on Sunday. Let me know,

Well I think shipping would be the most expensive part. Especially to get it there by Sunday. I have the whole assembly (clutch and fan). Separating the clutch assembly from the fan blades can cause serious problems.

I am obviously not trying to make a profit on this. But, in all honesty due to weight and shipping, it would be around $35, maybe more.

Could there be someone closer to you that could hook you up?

I guess I'll just do the Taurus fan, but I'm not going to worry about it before my trip. It only really comes into play at WOT.

Thanks for sharing, that's a really good idea. ~$200 for a flex-a-lite had put that mod towards the bottom of my to-do list.

I'll have to check out our local u-pull-it junkyard to see if there's any Taurus fans available.

This will also give me a reason to install the 100 Amp alternator upgrade I've had sitting in the garage for several months. It's from a 90's MR2, and includes a modified bracket and longer belt for installation.
