I got the whole truck...badly beaten up body but the mechanical parts are almost intact with exception of radiator, fan, transmission oil cooler..stuff like that.. the rest is in top shape..
Use the new frame and drivetrain, put your body on it?

Hi...That was my thoughts at first but it is easier said than done... The widths and length + design of frame & shape of bed of the two trucks are different plus the 2003 SUV had some damage in the front axle...

Hello pals,

NOTE: the following relates to swap project windancer
is doing now...reecall the 2003 Toyota 4.0L V6
(1GR-FE) engine swap into the 1992 4X4 X-cab toyota
p/u truck with 5 spd manual and 3.0L V6 (3VZ-E)

Here are my Q's:

1. I wish t o ask you about which year, make and model
do you think would firt my '92 Toyota 4X4 X-cab pick
up truck.

2. Now (if you can tolerate my imagination, read
through..!!). Ok, what if I keep the mid portion of
the IFS -where the gears rotate from the spining
propeller shaft- that is originally in my truck and
work into extending the <not sure what to call
them,....!!!> the shafts or rods goring to rotate/turn
left & right tires when engaging the 4X4..doing that
in such a way to move the center piece to the driver
side and may be..I'm saying maybe be able to fabricate
exact lengths and using same original flanges to have
the 6 bolts in place and tat way no need for a SAS and
the propeller shaft would have moved from passenger to
driver side!! Does that make sense to you??.. I hope!!

w/ Thanks, pls. let me hear your view..
Zak is bad

p.s.: I just learned that TRD will introduce the
Supercharger for the 1GR-FE. That would be really
great, but probably costly!!

God I hope this swap works. It'd be nice to see a few done and a write up as to what you need to do exactly to make this engine fit/work, etc. (i.e. lift, new torsion bars, etc.).

The lift kit (4 ") from Super Lift should arrive any day now..

As a very experienced mechanic I would not attempt an engine swap that has never been done befor. But I'm cheering for you, good luck!! =)

Praufet: I'm taking pics of everything as the project is going along... wiring harness + computer are taken out of the donor SUV and soon to my truck.. I intend to do a full documentation of teh project for all of you out there who gave me support, advice, cheers,... :-)

SupraSport: I can relate now to what you are saying... yet, I'm willing to give it the time and the money it deserves [ in reasonable sense] to get it all done and running. It's not easy at all.. lts of work... may be becaus eof lack of experience too, but I feel good about it thus far and so is my assistat

Guys..keep praying and we shall see it completed..

p.s.; I still do not know how to attach pics in this forum. Any one?

I've read that the wiring to adapt the vehicle harness to the 4.0L engine harness is nearly impossible due to advancements in technology.

The physical swap shouldn't be hard. In fact you'd be best off swapping the front diff and cv's into the old truck since the new stuff is made to accept the correct side drop of the xfer case and also the new stuff is much stronger.

The 4.0L seems like a great motor but a proven 3.4L swap with a TRD sc would give you the same power and A LOT fewer headaches.

Sean.. If I understood you right, then you are referring to the old harness [from the '92 truck] adopted to the newer 4.0 V6 [ 1GR-FE] engine....

but in my case I got a full donor SUV where I'm now in the stage of taking the wiring harness, guages, pedals (Drive-By-Wire), computer..etc from it and hooking it to my '92 pick up.

I sure hope will make it work w/ less hassle... you got me worried a bit but certainly, I'm open to advices and suggestions...

Many thanks Sean

Well if all you're doing is really a body-swap and you are keeping all of the heart of the donor truck then everything should work well it will just be LOTS of work. Are you going to try to keep the front 8" differential from the donor? That would really be awesome.

Hey, I say if you can pull this off then more power to ya. This is one of the more original swaps that I have heard of, so it will be interesting to see if it will work out or not. Not sure if it's an option, but the new Tacomas that have the 4.0 V6 also have that new 5 speed auto. I drove one and it's a lot nicer and smother than the 4 speed. Just a thought.

Any way, hope to see some pics soon.

Pics!!! I thought about this swap too, but I definately can't afford it at this time. That 4.0 is a sweet motor, it pulls hard. Good luck can't wait to see how this turns out

Ladies & Gentlemen.. I'm glad to announce that the engine started...wow & I'm very excited... <OK..deep breath...calm down.. count to 1, ya 1GR-FE>.. YES..YES..YES!
We started it and it runs... burrrrrrrs like a Persian Cat!!

Yup, you heard me right..the engine is mounted <using Mercedes_benz mounts.. they are more vertically set because of space limitations>.. looks great and... The radiator is coming in 2 days and I'm searching for an electric fan..

Any ideas of a good electric fan? I tried "Flex-A-Lite" - Black Magic- with my old 3.0 L V6 engine and I'm not impressed at all.

Now: Engine, Transmission, T-case are all from donor SUV along with computer and the web of wiring harness... it's coming cool despite the work and the frustrations at times... If I had to think it over.. YES, I would do it again... The challenge is just great..the exiliration.. the satisfaction... you name it.

Now, we are working on the Drive shaft, & exhaust system. Front axle "MAJOR" issue would follow. The truck may not even move... We did not test the transmission...forgot and the selector was not mounted yet! Oops.

Let me hear form you guys. thanks to every one for the support and believe me it's no "trivial body-swap"!!

I know you want pics.. pls. wait till this coming weekend.. let me hear from you now about the electric fan... few cheers would be nice too <GRIN>

Congrats! On my car I use the electric fan from a ford taurus. You can do a search and find more info. You can pic one up from a junkyard for 50 or less.

SPAL makes very nice electric fans, IMO from my experiences they are much nicer than Flex-A-Lite.

Congrats!

I didnt read the whole thread, so if what I say is a repost, Im sorry.

What I would look into, is to see if the IFS in the 4runner are the same length as the pickup, and try to mate the 4runner IFS into the pickup. That way you can use the auto tranny and the t-case and front driveshaft from the 4 runner.

Also, you may have to have a custom rear driveshaft made.
