Surging idle 22re
Found this site after searching for some info on my 22re surging idle problem:
http://www.geocities.com/toyotashawn/bizzareidle.html
The info described exactly what was going on with my truck (idle surging every 2-3 seconds, A/C off, brakes on, intermittent). I had noticed that my RPM's would be really high with the clutch depressed and most of the time when I pressed the brakes the idle would surge between 1000 and 1400 RPM's. I changed my air filter tonight and lubed the throttle cable at the throttle pulley and made sure to get some on the plunger under the throttle pulley. I also checked for a vacuum leak and I found that the compression nut on one of the rigid hoses going to the EGR valve had backed itself off (standing on the passenger side looking at the back of the injector assembly-?-near the firewall. Under what I'm pretty sure is the EGR valve you'll see a rigid hose with this nut on it). I tightened the nut and cranked it up. I immediately noticed the warm up idle was lower (down from 1600 to 1000) and when I let it warm up and drove it around I didn't have the surging idle anymore. I imagine that the major vac leak at the compression nut was the culprit. It appears that this problem happens with both the 4 and 6 cyl. engines, but I don't know if the 6 cyl. has the same setup. I would take a pic of the nut I'm talking about, but I don't have access to a digital cam at the moment. If someone wants a pic, let me know and I'll borrow the one from work. Hope this info helps!
