well, thanx again for all the great discussion, i learn somthing useful on this board every day i read from it!
Today i drove my very first time, and i also drove my very first toyota...not mine, but it was one! lol... today was my first of 3 appointments with my drivers trainer, and man it was really fun to be able to drive myself around... a lot eaiser than i expected too. It's kinda funny how I was able to sign up for the yota, i got a 4 cylinder EX-cab pickup, not sure what gen., but it was a newer one, not the older 80's style, probalby as new as 98 maybe?? well anyway...
my trainer (Bob) said that it had the bigger of the 2 4 cylinder engines i think...are there 2 different 22r's or did they get rid of that engine in newer models...
right now i am thinking there is a 22R and a 22RE... is that the diff?
Flamedx4 posted the specs on the different engines but listed the 22R twice, did you mean to type an E with the 22R on the second more powerful 4 banger??

22RE and 22R are the same motors as far as I know. THe E stands for EFI or fuel injection. the 22R was carbureted. In 96 with the new 4Runner coming out they put in a 2.7 4 cylinder for the base models. I don't know much about this motor, but it seems to do pretty well, although it's really hard to beat a 22RE. The 2.7 has about as much power as the 3.0 V6's do, and better reliability. Not sure what year they started sticking them in the Tacoma's. I would assume before 96 though.

ah so what i drove would pretty much be equivalent to the 3.0 V6 of a 89 4runner??
urrgh...the 22R must be a really hard worker then if it gets a 4runner goin...cause the 4 in that tacoma wasn't having the eaisest times with the freeway speeds...but it did good. i dunno, i'm tired and i'm getting off...thanx for the help. g'night!

I always needed the majority if not more of the onramp on my local highways to reach cruising speed of 70. The truck would still do 80+ pretty easy with 250K miles, and I hazard a guess it would have bumped 90. They're not the fastest, but they don't claim to be. Once you get them rolling though, if you're not loaded down and not towing something, you'll be alright. (Speaking of the 22RE here).
The 3.0 is a little bit faster, but many feel that its reliability outweighs its power advantage. I wouldn't be scared ofa 3.0 V6, just be aware of the issues it has or may have in the future.

If you do get a V6, don't get an automatic! Just trust me. Also, on the V6, be prepared for lots of pain if you plan to do all of the maintenance/mods yourself, or spend some cash to have someone else do it. The 4-banger is much easier to work on and is probably more reliable, although I'm approaching 200K on my V6 with no major problems. As for the Standard / Deluxe / SR5 argument - it's just like politics - you can't get one with everything you want and have to deal with lots of crap you dont want.

Well, i'm going to be posting a new thread asking on this, but i just found a 1990 V6 in my area for $3500 and my dad seems to be pretty serious about it, we're planning on going to look at it and i'm getting info on it as i'm posting this. I'll post on it now...

It's always been garaged and has a straight body...so i'm guessing it's pretty nice...
It has 165k miles, and most likely is in good condition, but now i doubt we're going to get it cause my dad dosen't want to pay that much now and he dosen't think i can afford insurance yet.....
and i haven't seen it so i can't say for sure what condition it's in but he said it was clean and it at least SOUNDED good.....lol
