someone blew a tranny driving to fast in 4 low?

how many stories have you heard about where someone blew a tranny driving to fast in 4 low?

None.. But my friend's Kia Sportage is stuck in 4w high and will not shift out of it..... So we are waiting to see what happens to it since it is driven on paved roads most of the time and only sees mud in her driveway... And believe me.. it sees mud then.. Her driveway is basically a big mud hole.

You'd blow your engine before your transmission. The 18mph limit in 4LO is because of engine RPMs, not limitations of your transmission. 4LO is a piece of cake for your tranny.

Never heard of it happening, but then again 4WL to me is at a crawl speed....

Hmm... 4WL or 4WLL or 4WultraL too many choices......

LoL.. I will agree.. But hey, she likes it and that thing has taken a beating and is still going. It takes one everyday going up and down her driveway.. Knee deep puddles and all. And she isn't all too gentle.

If a truck has a crawler box and puts in the clutch while coasting in low low range, the flywheel can blow up.

explain how that might happen. i can't think of how it would overspin and thats the only way i can think it may blow up. thanx

I've had my truck up to 35mph in 4LO in 5th gear for a very brief period of time, is that bad? My RPM's were at about 3500 I just wanted to see how strong every gear pulls

4Low is fun to romp on it. I love the sound of how much liuder the intake screams. I get heads turnin to when I do it. Just watch that redline or pop goes the 3.0.

I agree, the trans will hold up to the pressure but the eng will not forever.

I love tossing it in 2lo and barely letting the clutch out and getting a huge jump, makes me feel like I actually have some power, then I remember I don't.

If the tranny is left in gear the clutch plate will be driven by the input shaft and can reach self-destruct speeds even in stock low range. Never coast in any low range with the clutch in, instead shift to neutral on the tranny and take your foot off the clutch.

You're fine, just don't do it constantly and consider that your max speed. Occasional use like that won't hurt anything.

Because the low range is doubled, the clutch will be driven by the input shaft on the transmission beyond the speed it was ever designed to go.

A 22RE engine might see 3500 RPM. No big deal for the clutch. But if you have two transfer cases back to back, and they are both in low range, you will drive the clutch very fast. That 3500 clutch speed will now be ~20,000 RPM.

You don't even need a double transfer case setup to blow up the clutch. Just put it in low range first gear and coast down a long hill and get going 30 MPH. Your clutch won't make it.

You'd have to be coasting down a very steep hill for that to happen. Anything less and friction and drag will slow you down instead of accelerating. On flat ground that is simply impossible. Only possible way I see of doing that is letting the clutch out on Redcone or Lionsback or something similar. Sure, your clutch could explode but you've got bigger worries in that case... like death. A hill steep enough to overrev a clutch like that and be necessary to be in 4-lo in the first place is a low speed situation. Going 20+mph down Redcone is suicide. Plain and simple.

What was confusing about the statement was you mentioned the flywheel, when you should have said clutch friction plate. The flywheel won't blow, but it's possible to blow the clutch plate out. Personally, I try to never coast with the clutch pedal depressed and only use the crawl box when needed, like the lockers, use only long enough to get you past a given obstacle.


I found that the crawl ratios work the best in freeway gridlock

18 mph!

The fastest I can get her going in 4 Lo is 45mph. At 50 mph my engine redlines in 5th gear...

Damm.... I wish I still had 2 Lo...

I have definately done that before. Throw it in double low and just let it crawl right along...
