We might as well include the HIR H3 to upgrade your fogs!
Ok, I do plan to organize a group-buy for LED bulbs, Fatboy H4 for headlights, as well as HIR (Halogen Infrared Reflective) H3 for foglights. You guys are aware of the HIR technology, right? Okay, a lil' summary here regarding HIR just in case.
From IPF the manufacturer: -
HIR (Halogen Infra Red) technology produces a brilliant white light that is double the intensity of other bulbs with the same wattage, with up to 72% higher lumens per watt. These bulbs represent the latest in lighting technology. A special reflective coating to the outer surface of an HIR bulb allows visible light to pass through while infra red light (not visible to the human eye) is reflected back onto the filament. This recycling effect superheats the filament thus increasing light intensity.
IPF's HIR bulbs feature the most advanced technology available in Halogen lighting market and truly compare to the performance of HID systems.
The H3 HIR Bulbs feature:
* 33% More Light Intensity of Standard Halogen Bulbs
* 50% Longer Lifespan than Standard Halogen Bulbs
* 50% More Energy Efficient than Standard Halogen Bulbs
* Lower Operating Temperature than Standard Halogen Bulbs
* Improved Beam Pattern over Standard Halogen Bulbs
Apart from IPF, there's another Japanese bulb maker that markets HIR bulbs. I can include them as well.

IPF told me that the Fatboys can be used w/ factory harness w/ no problem but there ought to be some sort of overheating since that it draws more watts (80w) than the usual 55w. You may upgrade to our heavy duty H4 wire harness if you wish. I will include that in the group-buy item list. As for coloration, Fatboys H4 is rated at 3090K while the H3 HIR is rated at 3800K, so there is a visible difference in terms of coloration.
Actually, Fatboys H4 is also available in 3200K, 4000K, 4800K & 5000K in Japan. IPF USA told me that as long as we order 20 pairs (same model) or more w/ prepayment, they can special-order these for us. So, there is a chance that I can get you guys 4000K Fatboys which should be awefully close to H3 HIR in terms of color.

Is there a need to change the headlight wiring harness? With lower operating temperature than standard halogen bulbs, does it mean that the stock lens and reflectors need NOT be replaced?
Thanks.

Yes, because it's not the temperature of the bulbs he's talking about. He's reffering to the amount of current that it takes to power the bulbs. Thus more current will superheat the wires and may run the risk of frying the wires in those conditions.

Yes, so far, everything that we talked about: LEDs, H4 Fatboy, H3 HIR are all plug-n-play. And I am working on a group-buy for all these & more, stay tuned.

Questions for you physics nuts
Guys, can someone enlighten me please. I add up the watts of all the stock exterior filament bulbs of a '99 4Runner and it comes to 224 watts total. These include:
2x Front sidemarker = 10w
2x Front turn signal = 42w
2x Rear turn signal = 42w
2x Tail/Stop light = 42w
2x High mount stop light = 36w
2x License plate light = 10w
2x Back up light = 42w
Total = 224w
Note: the above calculation excludes headlights, foglights and all interior lights.
If I change the above to all LEDs, and for the ease of calculation, let's say that each LED bulb equals to 1w (for up to 15x diodes per bulb), this means we drop the power consumption from 224w down to 14w or less. What do we gain in terms of performance of the vehicle as a whole? Do we get better MPG, deeper bass in stereo, brighter headlight, more responsive acceleration? What practical improvements are we talking about here? Can we even measure/feel the improvements?
Just wondering......

In theory yes but I don't think you'd notice any gains but they may just add up over time and you'd most likely get better performance from your electrical system longer over the life of the vehicle.

fyi to all, i bought some 7443 LED brake bulbs and they are MUCH dimmer and less brilliant than regular bulbs.
i took 'em out. i put them in the turn signal slot and though i took em out again (cause theyre red), i liked how they flashed.. pretty cool. im gonna get some amber ones for the turns.

the turns illuminate in a cool way.. theyre more 'robotic' or something... they dont fade in and out like regular bulbs.. its ON OFF ON OFF in a consistently bright way.
not sure if that makes sense, but it does to me!
