Power Loss and 32" Tires : 3rd Gen
I'd like to put a set of P265/70R16 Bridgestone Dueler A/T
Revos on my 2000 'runner, but it seems that delivery times
are ridiculous (April 2003!) due to shipping problems.
I'm thinking of moving up to a 32" tire (P265/75) since
their availability is a bit better.
I'd previously decided _against_ this after reading about
the associated power loss and need for re-gearing.
Not to mention the higher price of the bigger tires. ;-)
Some posts state that the power loss, on a 3rd Gen,
"probably isn't very noticeable".
But I gotta tell you, I'm not thrilled by the idea of *any*
power loss at all!
So, those of you with 3rd Gens who've gone to 32s, and
have _not_ re-geared.... Did you notice an impact?
Thanks for any feedback!

Well, the 265/75/16 are usually less expensive since they are a more common size than the 70 series. So, I wouldn't count them out for that reason.
As for the power loss. Was it noticeable? Yes. Was it a huge loss? No. I noticed a slight loss of acceleration, but it wasn't bad. Can I live with it? Yes. For now.
I will eventually regear to 4.56. But I am going to wait as I may decide to get 285/75/16's before that happens and then I'll need 4.88's.
Hope this helps.

What Dr. Z said.
I witnessed noticeable, but minor power loss. To re-gear for this mild upgrade seems a little ambitious to me and certainly not something that needs to be done by any means, but whatever floats your boat. Still plenty powerful for me.
For what it's worth, 265/75 MT/R's measure right at 31" which is not to say that other brands of the same size would as well.
I will regear after I get 33's, but I wouldn't even think of it going and staying at 265/75's.

I ask because 31" seems short for such a tire and methinks you measured it on the truck with all the weight of said vehicle pressing down upon yon tire...

I would buy them from you Darren. But you're all the way in CO for one thing and I can't afford them now for another.
If you still have them in a few months, I will take them off your hands.

Now on my old Ranger, i went from 235/75/15 to 32 in mud tires, and that was a HUGE difference in power, even with the 4.0L
One inch (from 265/70 to 265/75) isn't going to make a big difference

Ditto to everything mentioned above. I noticed a power loss, acceleration is not wha it used to be by any means but hy that's the trade off. Is it bothersome, not really, I don't have the need to launch myslef off the line, I'm not trying to be a rice burner here, I'm a truck ad much rather look like it with big wide tires and a great sance. In fact I want some 33x12.50 for my next set of tires. Not to soon after I the tires and lift I did the deck plate mod and now I want to tackle the Dr. Z mod. I got some power and acceleration back. Get your tires do the 2 mods.and sooner or later get an exhaust and you will be just fine. Good Luck.

Sorry, I can't say I've noticed any "significant" power loss. Then again, I don't track my quarter mile or 0-60 to say for sure...and my speedo's a little off now with the larger tire. I do notice the larger tires feel clunkier, but I've gone on multiple road trips w/these tires, and through the mountains w/3 ppl & gear in the back and there's still more than enough power left in my opinion.
Other than that..I press my foot down & she goes..and passes other stuff on the road..I'm happy.
I think you'll be fine w/the 32's dude. And like Dr. Z said, price should be lower because it's a more common tire. I found that out when I bought mine.

Ony my dad's 97, he went from 265/70 stockers to 265/75 BFG KO's. Power loss, I would hardly call it noticeable, hardly grounds for a re-gear. The new rubber size was cheaper and easier to find, in stock versus a 3 week order.

Wow, *many* thanks for all the feedback! I really appreciate
it everybody.
About price vs. tire size... a bigger 32" tire isn't
necessarily cheaper, depends on the load rating. Here
are some prices from TireRack.com :
Bridgestone Dueler A/T Revos
Tire_Size Load_Rating Tread_Depth Price
P265/75R16 SL 13/32" $103
P265/75R16 C 15/32" $120
P265/75R16 D 16/32" $132
P265/70R16 SL 13/32" $112 (only SL available)
Bridgestone Dueler A/T D693
Tire_Size Load_Rating Tread_Depth Price
P265/75R16 C 16/32" $105 (only C available)
P265/70R16 SL 13/32" $91 (only SL available)
About the mods : Yup, deckplate, Dr Z's, Amsoil, and exhaust are
all probably in my future. Was just irked by the fact that the
gains from all that work would be (slightly) countered by the
power loss of the tire upgrade, given that a re-gearing is much
less likely to happen. But... good to hear that you all agree that
the impact isn't huge.
(also some concern because I bought my 'runner used, and
I'm simply _assuming_ that it's appropriately geared for
the P265/70R16's that are on it; I didn't know enough to
ask at the time, oops!)
About availabilty in CA : the guy at the tire retailer I'm
dealing with mumbled something about "container ship" and
"backlog at the docks". So it might be a regional issue,
due to the strike.... But I'll push it a bit, given what
dukestr found.
About mileage : Hmmm.... If naksukow's experience (17% or
more decrease) is at all typical, then I guess I'd have to
give that some serious thought...

before the new tires yielded 20.4 mpg, and about
19.5 with the P265/75s. 70 mph. Level terrain. So
about a 5% decrease in mileage with the bigger tire.
Not terrible....

One thing I noticed with my 32's is that my speedometer is DEAD ON now. I verified this with GPS, and I mean it is right on up to 80mph. It might be 2mph off at 100mph, but that's it.
Weird, being that this tire size isn't stock.
I know that my odometer and trip meter are off, however. This makes calculation my MPG very fun.

I know this is an older post, but I came across it in my search. Basically, I'm looking into the same thing as the starter of the post. I have a 2.7L 2001 Tacoma 4x4, which came with P265/70/R16's stock. The first time I bought new tires, I went with something narrower b/c the 265/70's are so funky to get ahold of. I went with 245/75's. Next time (not time yet, but plan plan plan!) I want to step up to 265/75's. According the links that I followed and my VIN number, i have 3.91 gears stock. So how will the 2.7L handle a little bigger tire? I assumed that most of the posts here are with a V6 engine. How much does regearing cost? Thanks.

ewarner,
i was thinking the same thing and i found that regearing is around $1500 for parts and labor, according to the search results on YT. Try the terms "regearing" or "4.88" or "4.30" or "5.29" one of those will work for ya.

Ray, never heard of the "spork" package before, sounds interesting... just giving you a hard time man.
There are alot of different gear combos from what I understand, and a couple of websites to figure out what you have based on numbers located on your vehicle.
