Heat is the key to getting the glue to come apart... Oven is a good idea... low heat.. 5+ mins or so... heat gun on low... also a good way to go....

And hurry up!!! I wanna see pics!!! heheheheh... I may have to order a set and do this soon

thanks, ill try and do them friday maybe. do yall think that 225 or 250 degrees sounds about right. i dont really want to melt the whole plastic housing in the oven also.

All I can say is if you have some time to kill, start with a lower temp... put them in for 5 mins on low... if thats not enough start increasing temp slowly... 200, 225... thats not all that hot... but start on the safe side... also be gentle with plastic... if it feels like its not going to go, dont risk cracking the lens... let head be your friend and work slowly and cautiously....

I had a thought about this last night... For some reason I couldn'y sleep... so I just let my brain work.... I am going to order my cheap lenses and do this same thing very soon... If you paint the inside of the lens, when you go to glue the lense back onto the housing, you may cause the paint to peel or the glue wont stick right.... what about painting the outside with a transparent amber paint and clear coating??? I have seen the red done outside of clear tail light lenses and they looked really nice!!!

well i have one in the oven right now and it seems to be working. the first time i put it in on 250 for 5 minutes and you could tell the glue was softer. but if it doesnt work i will just paint the outside of the other one and see what that looks like since i already have the paint. if it looks good i will just order another pair, since they dont cost much.

well i guess i left it in there too long because the housing melted a little, but it did come apart. but i thing that painting the outside is going to be the best bet because of the little piece in the lense that is clear (supposed to be orange) is going to be a different sade of orange after you have painted it. i only put one coat on it but you can tell right away that that piece will be a lighter orange than the rest. i am going to paint the outside of the other one and see what it looks like. but i really liked the color of the one that i painted the inside of i was a darker orange than the stock color.

if you just painted it with that metallic spray paint that people use to make their tail lights red, then you dont necessarily have to clear them. the paint will fade SLOWLY over time, and just reaplly whenever you feel the need. its as easy as masking tape n shaking the can. if youre using some other technique, then idk, but clears from the store are ok if u ask me.

im getting a set of clears...and gonna try painting the outside of em. i remember a while back (when all red tails were all the rage) there was a coloured rattle can you can get to paint plastic lenes. my buddy painted his factory jettaIII tail lights all red, and it looked pretty good! definitely not as much work as baking em & prying them apart...etc.

getting em to match exactly to the factory one may be difficult...so you may have to end up painting em both regardless...

hunt21286..i can host some images for you..or you can register at something like photobucket.com its free, it'll resize pics for you, and also have direct url linking for forum posting. but if you wanna mail em to me..ill put em up on my site. interested to see how they look as well...
