Your speedometer is off so much because your tire size is way larger than stock. My old 2wd came with 205/75-14 tires.

I have a tach on my truck and rarely use it (although I'm always right around 3000 rpm when i ˟˟˟˟). Listen to the engine. If you've driven enough stick shifts, you should know when to shift just by the sound.

sounds is always the best way to go because guages are not always accurate..unless of course you like to listen to loud music while ur driving ..haha since i got my new clutch ive been screwing up all the time because im so used to where it used to catch and i cant hear the engine or feel it because of my sub..lol i have to go back to driving with no music till i get a feel for the new clutch

ya loud music kinda makes it a guessing game when you dont have a tach.

Just rest your hand on the shifter and you can feel the RPM's. Sorta.

Thats what I figured. Im going to get 31" tires next time around. Is it going to be off even more, like 13-14mph? Is there any way to correct the the speedometer?

Yes, it will be off by even more. You might be able to fix this with an adapter from Tacoma Speedometer & Instrument. I corrected my speedometer with one of their adapters, however your truck may not have a mechanical speedometer cable like mine. It might have an electronic connection.

I dunno, for me it was really hard to get used to it. Comming from small block engines, the sound of a 4cyl getting higher rpms sounds soo wrong. But the 22re really seems to like 2500-4000 rpm. I also know for a fact that you get better gas milage at about 3000-3500 rpm, at 2000ish you just dumping gas and going nowhere.

You can get a simple tach for about $30 at almost any auto parts store, like this one . They are real easy to install, one ground, one for a light, and one to read the rpms. There are several places you can tap into but There is an extra connection in a terminal you can plug it right into on your truck. Cant recall which one at the momemnt, but someone else will.

this is for his 85 so its definatly mechanical.
I have had my speedo cable disconnected for a while because it was squeeking alot, when I replace it I will have to get one of those adaptors for sure. Mind me asking howmuch $$$ becuase it dosent say on their site.

I cant beleive some of ya'lls rpms! I usually shift at 2500 rpms. Anything more and it "sounds soo wrong" - SO LOUD. Unless in 4th or 5th, my 22re likes 1700-2500 rpms. I shift relying on "sound", but after driving my old jeep which shifts were 2k-3.5k...I took notice of my rpms and speeds.

This is pretty accurate to my shift speeds. I shift to 2nd closer to 10mph though and 5th at 50mph.
