In a nutshell, why is the 4runner a poor HP and MPG performer? What can be done?

There really aren't very many inexpensive modifications that you can make that will help you to improve your gas milage or power. I can suggest a couple of things that will help, but they will only help minorly. I also live at about 5,000 feet and I experienced a loss of power and poor gas mileage. These modifications will help.

The first thing that I can suggest is to get a cold air intake. They will range anywhere from $100 to $300 depending on where you buy it and what brand you go with. I bought one on Ebay for about $100 and upgraded the cheap filter it comes with to a K&N. The cold air intake I purchased was $100 on Ebay and is exactly the same as the K&N, just without the brand name. It came with all the necessary vac lines and a heat shield. I noticed better throttle response, better acceleration, and better MPG (about 20 extra MPG per tank). It also gives a much deeper sound to the engine which is never a bad thing. More air = more power and this is a fairly inexpensive way to get more air into the engine.

The second thing that I can reccommend is Seafoam (if your 4Runner has over 75k miles or so). My car has 160k miles on it and I ran some Seafoam through the intake, crank case (oil), and gas tank and I noticed an improvement in idleing and a minor improvement in MPG.

You won't notice huge gains in MPG but they do help and they pay for themselves. If you really want to improve your MPG a supercharger is the way to go but they can run from $1,000 to $5,000 depending on what you go with.

whats wrong with driving the speed limit and keeping a light foot on the gas pedal? that should help mpg...no matter how fast you drive, there are stop lights on every block that slow you down.

I know this topic is a couple years old, but when you ask questions like this, it makes me wonder.

people don't buy suv's for their awesome gas mileage, they buy them for hauling things, whether it's their family or a boat or camper.

If you do the speed limit(i never do) you will get over 20 mpg as long as you aren't fighting a ton of hills.

I typically go 75-85 in our 01 sport. I typically get 15-19 mpg and i don't really care about getting better mileage. If i want that i'll drive the little integra rice burner that gets 28 mpg.
my wife wants to get a new sequoia in a couple years, i sure hope we get better gas mileage in that......

If you want better mileage get a station wagon.
