Noisy front end

I have a 92 4runner that is making a rumbling/scraping sound from the front end between 20-30 MPH. It seems directly related to wheel/tire speed. I have replaced BOTH front drive axles. The rotors are not warped, and there seems to be no play in the wheel bearings. I am thinking that I one of the replacement axles may still be the culprit. Can I remove the axles and drive the truck without them (just to isolate the problem) without damaging the wheel bearings? I know that on some front wheel drive cars, your'e not even supposed to roll the car around without the axles in place because they support the bearings.
