I've also noted a huge difference in mileage between automatic and manual transmission vehicles. I bought the manual transmission 4Runner because my buddies with automatic transmission 4runners (three of them) all got mid 16 MPG on good days.

Where the he!! have I been???

I have never heard of a 3VZ getting over 18 doing ANYTHING...I get 18 in my 3rd gen completely stock (city driving). No way in the name of George Bush could I get anywhere near 22mpg!! If I could have then I never would have switched from a 2nd gen period.

I don't mean to offend people but something has got to be different about your rigs if you are getting 22mpg.

Steven - you had a car full of guys, going by the average I would say that it was about 180 pounds per person or more and if you had a car full I would guess that to be 4 guys including yourself as the driver thats 720 pounds of people not including anything else you had in the car plus the 4k pound vehiicle WITH the A/C blasting the whole way...that is insane, I want your 2nd gen!!

Could be altitude or oxygenated gas...when I bought my 95' 4runner, manual trans, driving around Colorado I got 19-20mpg where as I get 16-17mpg average in NC...FWIW

hahaha really wanna blow some minds?

I got 27mpg on my rig - however I did nothing but draft a buddy's triple axle enclosed trailer at 60mph leaving nashville headed back to florida. 90% of the time I merely turned off overdrive and took my foot off of the gas and let her go down like that...

my runner rocks

Well, i dont know why my truck gets good mileage, but it sure does. 91 3.0 w/ 165K miles, 5-speed, 4.56 gears, 31" tires, i do about sixty miles a day (about 3/4 highway @ 55-70mph) and the worst i get is eighteen (a/c on with more town driving), ive gotten all the way up to 23 with a light foot on the highway. All of this driving is done at about mile-high elevation which does make a bit of difference, i drop 2-3 mpg down in Phoenix.

Before the new fuel filter is was a few less, but nothing horrible. And i still have enough power to pass people if i care to. My truck rocks!

Elevation? Must be the key. I get a nearly constant 16 mph, here at 10-15' above sea level.

My mileage sucks (15-17 like most),
The tanks too small, (barely get 300 miles out of it)
but lord help me, I'm getting used to the power (or lack thereof). It doesn't seem all that lame to me after a month with the 3.0. I've upgraded her from "tolerable" to "adequate" in the power arena. (Still hoping for an MAF conversion though.)

Heck, I LOVE the mileage of my 4runner, its Awesome. Well it is when I compare it to the mileage of my 92' Landcruiser. OUCH!
If I get 12MPG out of that thing, I'm lucky!
But dang they are both so much fun!

Must be a difference between the ATM and MTM. The wife and I just got back from a trip to Minnesota, and we got about 21 mpg(95 4Runner, 3.0, mtm).

Hey Knaffie, I was just curious, where did you get your engine from? I'm having some problems with my 3.0 and most likely I'll have to find a new one. Thanks in advance.

I guess mine is coming in a little less than average then. The best I was able to do on a long freeway trip was 18.9mpg. That is with the auto, 31in tires, 2 people, and luggage.

I would also think it unlikely that a brick-like Runner can get better gas mileage than my 2.7 coupe, which gets 24.5 ave (city and highway), but it is difficult to argue with the numbers as long as the odometer is correct. Not all motors are identical, there are always some really good gems. Feel lucky if you have one.

I assume these are all mostly stock 4-runners you guys are talking about, just know that once you go bigger, mileage will suffer. (but I think we all know that).

I am running 5.29 gears and 33's with the auto and still manage to get 13-14 combined hwy/city driving. I am hoping that once I go to 35's it will match up to the gears a little better and hopefully give me an extra mile or two.

Man I'm an idiot...It took me like 5 minutes before I realized you were in kilometers...and I'm a physics major, we like the metric system. I was like "who runs a new motor at 90 MPH???" I just rebuilt my 3.0 and I'm happy with it, now that it doesn't leak oil since I re-replaced the valve cover gaskets. (overtightened them the first time)
