The stock roof racks are rated for I think up to 100-160lbs (not sure though)
And I don't know how much your after market one can take...

IMHO I wouldn't drive that long with a box spring and matress on top
Even if it was strapped down good, the downforce and drag created by them would probably cause you to fill up a good number of times...

We have a trailer and both me and stepdad have a hitch...
I would say go get a hitch and rent a trailer
But wouldn't renting a truck one way for a day be cheaper?

Also you have no buddies that have a pickup or anotehr SUV witha htich that you could borrow?
I know it may be an inconvinence to them, but hey at least it;s better then askin them to help you move everything else with you

If you do descide to put them up top take back roads so you can stay at a lower speed..

If you get the hitch and trailer, make sure you strap them down tight still...
I was driving down the jersey Turnpike once and had to wave down a guy that was about to loose a mattress outta his trailer...

Well one thing is for certain, if you do mount it, also tie it down up front and back to create less wind resistance.

also if you tie it down put the box spring on top so the mattress dosne't end up flipping up in the air on you...

I have seen so many people driving around with half the mattress stickin up in the air...

From everything I've collected from your replies, Ive decided to do the right thing.

1) Rent Mazda Miata
2) Strap boxspring and mattress with 1 piece of rope to soft top
3) Drive 90mph on hiway

The most important thing is getting the front tied down good - then the sides - and the rear is last. If no wind gets under the front of the mattress, it will be relatively safe. I have had mattresses on top of my van a few times and have taken the highway at 65.

Just run that strap through the windows and all the way through. Just get in and out Dukes of Hazzard style. Seriously though, I was just at the junkyard last week and hitches were just laying around everywhere.

Well, im going to go to Wal Mart and get a tow hitch right now.

i have a ton of other stuff i need to move, and rather than shoving everything in my truck, I'll just save my sanity and put it in the trailer.

Just spent $140 on a Class III hitch from U-Haul. It was the cheapest one around town.

Yeah, yeah, I coulda drove up and gotten one from pick-n-pull but I didn't know what the chances of 96-2002 4runners would be there with hitches?!

So its gonna cost me $66 for the trailer for 2 days.

$200 move? Eh, I've done it for free twice before.
