Lug-centric or hub-centric (again)
I rotated my tires for the first time yesterday (myself). Wheel/lug nut design was not at all what I expected.
Most vehicles that I've owned had the holes in the wheels just large enough for the lugs to go through. Then, the lug nut would have a tapered end (facing the vehicle).
On the runner (02 with alu wheels), the wheels have HUGE holes. Lug nuts are looong. They have a "shoulder" about 1 inch long that the wheel actually sits on. Without the nuts in place, even if the wheel is pushed all the way in, the center hole is quite loose on the hub, which really seems like the wheel is lug-centric.
It's quite a pain in the butt to put first lug nut in, since you kinda have to hold the wheel up with one hand to center the wheel's lug hole on the lug, in order for the lug nut to screw in.
Also, and this is not about how the wheels is centered any more.. I was hoping to jack up the rig so that both wheels would lift off. No luck! My jack goes up to 21", I could not find a place anywhere on the frame that would raise both wheels. To get the rear wheel up, I had to be pretty close to the rear and max out the jack, but then the front would still be on the ground. I ended up using a stand under rear axle.. made the job MUCH longer than it could've been. If you want to rotate your own tires and have both wheels come off the ground at once, you'll need a jack that goes up at least 23", I think.
