In my '91 Runner I pulled a flatbed with 4 quads and 3 bikes (at least 3500lbs+) on it over 1000 miles. I had lift, tires, etc, and I got a surprising 13-16mpg going 60-70ish in cruise control the whole way. Just watch the stopping distance! Stock brakes weren't meant for too heavy a load.

yep, I just made a spreadsheet. it shows my trip down to houston with the trailer, then 1 tank without the trailer and then finally my trip back up here after changing the sparkplugs and cleaning the throttle body.

here:

Date ........ Start ... Fill-up Miles Gallons $/Gal MPG Cost Octane

Towing from Greenville to Houston - Drove through ice storm in Atlanta

1/29/2005 120956 121156 200 15.054 $2.10 13.29 $31.60 93
1/29/2005 121156 121377 221 17.195 $2.10 12.85 $34.37 93
1/29/2005 121377 121558 181 15.186 $2.04 11.92 $30.96 93
1/29/2005 121558 121780 222 18.310 $1.97 12.12 $36.05 93

Not towing
2/1/2005 121780 122006 226 15.327 $2.10 14.75 $32.17 93

Trip from Houston to Greenville after changing sparkplugs and cleaning throttle body
2/6/2005 122006 122249 243 15.499 $1.90 15.68 $29.43 87
2/6/2005 122249 122492 243 16.034 $2.00 15.16 $32.05 93
2/6/2005 122492 122750 258 15.619 $2.06 16.52 $32.16 93

I still have to fill up now to account for the other 250 return miles. One-way trip from my house in Houston to my apartment in Greenville is exactly 1000 miles. I'll update the chart when I fill up this week.
