Got rear ended: 4Runner 1 Ranger 0

I was sitting waiting for traffic to turn and then she just didn't stop. She said that she was arguing with her X (who owns the truck). He said that she was going too fast. Go figure.
Her driver's side frame horn hit just below my receiver on my hitch. This caused her truck to rotate counter clockwise and her passenger side bumper hit my bumper.
This is why she is sitting at an angle.

It'll buff out,

But Her's won't

I was able to drive away while she was towed.
Its been a week and I feel the full extent of the hit. It shot all my change out of the ash tray and opened the cup holder in the dash. My sun glasses ended up on the dash from my face. I do wear my seat belt.
Preliminary x-rays show a problem with my neck at C4-C5. Might explain the bad headaches I have had since the crash. The police report has her going 25mph which she agreed with but I find that hard to believe looking at the small amount of damage to my rear.
I am getting the 4runner checked out for frame and internal injuries.
This neck pain sucks and the anti-inflams. and muscle relaxers make me sleepy all the time.

go to a Chiropractic doctor and get it checked out. You get to get free massages and do cool thing like the electro stimulus machine!

The best thing about it is its FREE!!!

hope you feel better man.

I had a similar accident happen when I was 17. I had a 79 Ford Ranger and was sitting at a red light on the main street in town with the speed limit at 35. I looked in my rear view mirror and saw a lady approaching me in a 4 door sedan but didn't appear to be slowing down. I had a buddy with me and told him to get ready to be rear-ended so we braced ourselves and BAM!!!

I was a little nervous to get out, since all i could see thru the mirror was smoke coming from the back of my truck. I stepped out to check the damage and could see that the front of her car was totaled. Her hood was pushed up about a foot and the damage made it hard for her to open her door.

There just happened to be a cop across the street who saw everything, so he immediatly came over and both of us got our papers out for him to check. Not until after that did I check the damage on my truck.....she tagged my rear bumper which was a reinforced home-made steel thing-ama-bobber and only scratched my bumper sticker.

She got towed and I'm sure the car was totaled if not, close to. I had her give me 1.50 out of pocket for a new bumper sticker and drove home, lol.

Funny how some rear-end accidents work out that way.
Hope you get your back worked out, stiffness isn't fun, but overall, good to see everyone was ok.

Thanks,
I started earlier this week at the Chiro and yesterday with the massages. It really helped for about an hour but the Dr. said that it will take time. He was the one that found the extended C4 disc. He wants an MRI to see if a tendon is torn.
This really screws up my training for the Flying Pig marathon next month. Such is life, we'll still liven. But I thought I was in decent shape but the tight back/neck muscles are killing me, nothing is comfortable, can't sleep can't stand and looking down to study is not happening right now. I just want to float in a pool somewhere.
He did send me home with a small portable electro stimulus machine. Pretty nice until I stretched and the connector came out of the sticky pad landing on my bare skin. It's like touching an electric fence with your tongue.

Now if I could work Photobucket and get these pics smaller life would be grand.

Her hood scuffed my rear hatch and a small ding under the light. Both are to see from my camera phone pics. The passenger side bumper is pushed in but that took me awhile to see. Her passenger side frame horn put a dent in the side of my hitch tube, you can see the informational sticker damaged in the extreme closeup pic. That took some role playing at the scene with the office and me.
Her insurance company estimated it at $1,800 while still keeping it open for hidden damage.

I'm really glad that her and her passanger where not hurt.

Sounds like you could get a great "replacement bumper" like an Armorolgy or the like. Good luck on the rehab. Go to a good rehap Dr. and get some exercises/stretches.

almost the same thing happened to me in my old 4runner which also had a hitch. the ranger that hit me wasnt going nearly as fast, but there was a nice square gouge in his bumper where my truck had no cosmetic damage.

i found out later that the hitch cracked, so you might want to check yours out...

I would suggest going to a medical doctor and not a chiro. Especially if its your back. Speaking from experience, don't mess around with a chiro. A massage is NOT going to help repair a disc nor is a little e-stim.

Another way to look at it. Massage to fix a disc is like a paint job to fix a bent frame on your 4runner. Not gonna work. Anyway my 4 cents.

Similiar thing happend to me with my old 4runner as well.

I was sitting at a stoplight when I saw this car in my rear-view mirror coming right at me w/o stopping. I was able to brace myself and have no injuries at all...

I had a smitty-built bumper in the back, and It bent one of the mounts about 1/2"... lol. Her Civic was totaled. Literally smashed in a good 1-3 feet. Makes me really want to put some steel back there.

Hope you get better though. Luckily it wasnt your fault!

I had similar accident about 5 years ago when I had my 92 4x4 Toy Pickup. I was sitting still at a red light when I got rear-ended by a Lincoln Navigator. His Navi was tore to pieces and was definitely totaled. Mine would have been fine had he not been going about 40 mph when he hit, because the impact shot my truck foward about 5 feet into a lifted FOrd Ranger in front of me and smashed the front of my truck too (that totaled it). I had to go to the Chiropractor for 6 months for therapy, I had pinched a nerve and jammed my neck in about the same place it sounds like you did. Whatever you do take full advantage of the Chiro and don't sign anything their insurance company throws at you they will try to screw you. I ended up getting some settlement money, but to this day my back hasn't been the same and the money they gave me was not worth the back problems I have now.

wow...looks like your hitch saved your truck! her ranger got own3d. glad to hear your ok, but of course, after getting rear ended...things are never the same. ive got hit hard twice within a 6 month period..and it sucks. physio, chiro, massage therapy..did it all and im still tweaked. my hit in the runner was just just from a lil puny colt, but old man driving accidentally hammered on the gas instead of the brakes when trying to stop behind me. i had much more damage to my bumper, but then again...i wasnt running a hitch.

sue the beeyotch for bein an idiot and personal injuries. i cant believe how some people just brush things off like that, then realize their injuries later on. people dont go to jail for rear ending..but paying through their A$$ in insurance premiums usually is suffice restitution..imo anyway. hopefully, next time, itll teach em to pay a lil more attention when driving.

good luck with your recovery lance!

The only reason I hate clutches. If you are sitting on a hill with somebody too close behind you, and you let off the brake and clutch, it is a big possibility that you will tag them.

There is a hill near my school that I use to get to school rather then using the ĊĊĊĊty light system in our town, and a little accord got too close behind me. I didn't see them in the rear veiw because my rear window was all dirty from the rain and stuff off the highway, and when I let out the clutch and brake, I heard a BAM, and I stopped rolling backwards. I went forward, and stopped at somebodys house. The dude in the car followed, and all that happened was my back bumper hit his grill, and gouged it a little. He didn't care, so we didn't feel the need to report it. When I got home a few days ago, I noticed that my rear bumper is a little loose. That might also be from a little bumper to bumper on the driveway (my mom was going a little too fast) but I am still gonna check it out some time.

Oh, and also, Chiropracters are great, but make sure you get that MRI and figure out if anything is wrong. My dad has a hurniated disc, and has to go in and get steriod shots once a year. I hope it all works out for you.

Thanks for all the helpful advise. I'm getting a referral to a neck specialist.
Now what to do about a bumper. Hmmmm
