Lee,
I have a 98 SR5 and I removed the SR5 and the Toyota emblem. I left the oval T emblem on as well as the "4Runner". Mine is a little different as the "4Runner" emblem is actually on the license plate garnish.
Looks much better, much cleaner. Personally I dont care if the average schmo or soccer mom knows if i have an SR5 or a Limited.

#2...Luckily my dealer didn't put an actual emblem on, just a sticker that I could remove if I wanted to but it doesn't really bother me...I love my dealer so I figure a little advertising for all the discounts and breaks they've given me is OK.

id go for option three, i really want to take off mine because i have the gold package and it looks way stupid on a red 4runner. how do you actually take them off? can you just pop them off with a screwdriver or are there holes or what? i jsut dont want to take them offto find monster holes left behind.

The only holes are in the back Toyota Symbol. the 4runner, sr5 and toyota(spelled out) are just stick ons. im replacing mine with chrome and im in the process of taking them off. get some adhesive and a rag....a hair dryer to heat it up a bit... i wouldnt recommend using a screwdriver.. i have some sort of thin metal tool i use. kinda like a paint scraper or something or like a puddy smoother. I dunno what it is but its flat and thin and fits perfect behind the emblem .

The option I like isn't listed. Pull them all off (except the Toy "symbol"). Then reapply the "TOYOTA" text on the lower left and reapply the "4Runner" on the lower right. (This is the same scheme as the 4 Gens and I like it (I'm doing the same, BTW)

I did the Poor Man's Black Pearl mod and after about 3 months, the back emblems are almost all chipping. My guess is that I didn't rough up the emblems enough, and that I may not have done the coating process correctly (timing application of paint layers, etc.). I must say that on my dark green metallic paint job it looks SUPER cool, but if the gold starts showing through too much, it's off with 'em.
I'll also note that the front emblem is held on with screws...tiny, tiny, barely accessible, forhead smacking, knuckle crunching, screws...
