Difference between '01 and '04 2.4 engine?

I noticed that the 2003-'04 2wd taco with the 2.4 liter engine is rated 2 mpg better on the highway than the exact same '01 taco.

Anyone know what the difference is?

Upgrade possible?

Didn't the 2rz/3rz receive vvti in '03 or was it not until '05?

Could also be a number of other things. Weight, different gearing, options, etc.
