On a manual Runner, the 4x4 lever "wraps" around the shift lever so its actually on the passenger side, much like in a Tacoma. It's kind of an odd setup, but I think Toyota did it that way so we could have enough room the the shift lever to travel. Also, no push-button 4x4 on the manual Runners.

Also, I took a close look at the dash and no locker switch. Bummer. But you can wire in a factory one as half the wiring is there.

The 4wd shifter on the 5spd's is on the right side hidden by the manual stick in that picture. I have that exact same 4runner except mine is dd pearl. Nice find, I paid $21k for mine last year.

I know on some of the Fuel Gauge TSB's, the fix was to replace a bunch of stuff, one of which was to replace the instrument cluster. This could be why the mileage was flagged in the CarFax report.

LOL, you guys are funny. I cleared this with my wife ahead of time. She was watching the auction at work. She kept refreshing her screen hoping my name wouldnt pop up, then, ha ha, my username popped up in the last 10 seconds.

She told me to use my best judgment. She's a great wife!

Now, if I can just get one of the cool guys on this board to check this beast out for me...I will feel much better.

About the 4WD...well, I have a stick and I should have known that the shifter was on the other side. Regardless, CARFAX confirms that the vehicle is so equipped.

I noticed that the seller has "0" history, a "red flag" in my books but I guess you have to start somewhere. I hope it works out for you though.

Hey, Christian-
Buying a vehicle sight unseen can be an interesting venture. I have purchased 3 cars that way including my latest addition, a 1983 Pickup. Before you go pick it up, find a dealer near by and schedule an oil change, wheel balance, cooling system flush and general tune-up. If you have the funds, a timing belt change could mean more peace of mind.

Just my 2¢

I think there is nothing wrong with buying vehicles sight unseen but don't hand over any cash at all before they hand over a valid title and you have had time to check the vehicle over to your liking. Most valid sellers are OK with this and will accomodate. If you did get that price you did get it for a steal despite the odometer discrepancy. I would bet the speedometer was replaced at one time and thus the "000000" start on mileage odometer makes it look very low. Great buy none the less.....who cares even if it has over 100k, those toyotas are bulletproof

96runner,
What are going to do with your 96? or is this a second so you can turn your 96 into a trail king?

Hey mang, aren't you also the guy that won the free sliders? Now you get a deal on a 4Runner?! Some guys have all the luck!

edit: I just noticed it has the hood scoop too! someone made a deal with the devil that's all I gotta say!

First things first. I have to make sure this Runner I just “won” is ok. Once I verify everything is ok, and decide to go and get it, the 96 will be up for sale – locally and on the boards.

My 96 will be a great deal also. 75K miles, all maintenance done meticulously, new stereo, etc. I know I wont get what I want for it, but I am not going to get low-balled, that’s for sure.

I wish I had the time and money for a trail rig – but I don’t. My wife and I made a promise that we will never have a car loan again, so I have to sell the 96.

I appreciate everyone’s comments.

Christian,

If you are expecting to do ministry work as a vocation that is a wise move for sure and your promise is truly dripping with wisdom. As soon as I can get a vehicle paid for, I am going to pay that amount towards my other payment and OWN both my vehicles and then drive them until the paint peels off.

that is a balsy buy and the fact of the 0 ebay rating would scare me right away. Also the "with not much blemishes" quote scares me--check under the hood and under the fenders for overspray paint--hence bodywork. ..Otherwise it sure looks nice.
Best of luck!

Other tell tale signs of mileage are wear on the pedals and check the radiator and see how dinged up it is,with only 17k it should look still new with minimal fin dings.

I bought a 1997 runner before my 1999 and the car fax record come back with odmeter tampering. I was heart broken because I realy wanted to buy it and it was a realy good deal. I did a paper chase for like 2 weeks calling defferent DMVs. It ended up being carfaxs mistake. The dealer had told me he had had a few cars that they where wrong on. Maby they will be wrong on this one to. The toyota dealer that I took the 1997 to to see if it had been tampered with did a some kinda of exaust test. They also told me it was imposible to role the odmeter back.

Good luck, I hope that makes you feel beter

We had a similar title/carfax problem with my wife's new car several years ago. When the car was initially titled with the DMV, the title clerk made a keying error. The title was flagged as True Miles Unknown and this was passed on to Carfax. :pat:

We were unaware of this error until we got the title from the bank after paying the loan off. By that time the error had been on the books for 3 years. It took me 6-8 months to get it straightened out. In the end the state reissued us a clean title and Carfax cleared the mileage error. It was a real PITA to get this cleared up, but absolutely necessary when it came time to sell.

Quick Reply: Check out the 4Runner I just bought!
