Ok, if I don't know much about cars, I can at least read the manual. I know what an ECT button does...

Idk, its an auto, a heavy truck. its not meant for speed.

As far as reliability goes, its a great motor, and a great truck.

I have a 5speed 3.0L 4runner and its SLOW!!!!!!!!
My mom has a auto 3.4L 4runner and its sweet to drive, except for the auto part. Eventhough, that motor has got me drooling for a 3.4 swap. All i am saying is the motor you have is not a bad one. It puts out a decent amount of power.

If you really want more power, you can look into the supercharger for the 3.4.

And for the 5-speed swap, is this something you would plan on doing? If so take into consideration the amount of the tranny, rebuild if needed, all the tools needed, problems you might/will run into and the time it is going to take.

I would put that all into consideration before you jump into a swap.

Just curious, Have you spent much time driving stick? To get the most from a manual, you will be abusing it. Try to drive a stick against an auto & you might be surprised. Then remember that the auto can do it repeatably time after time, day after day. As for your auto, turn off (on?) the ECT & the O.D. if you have it. Also changing the tranny fluid could improve the shifting.

Not sure where you got that 7 second figure for a manual tranny, (maybe it was supercharged? 2WD?) but if it was from a magazine, remember they didn't own the truck & could abuse it all they want. Sticks are fun to drive, but unless you can change it yourself, clutches are expensive to replace.

Toyota is known best for reliability, rarely do they build the fastest (at least not in the U.S) in their class. A Supercharger is the best upgrade if you want more speed but check here first: http://www.gadgetonline.com/Super.htm
As with most things there are consequences & compromises.

Unless you have a lot of time & $$$$ invested in your ride, it is best to get a 4Runner that already has a stick.

"Second, it seems that the word "race" messes things up.. I doubt that by "racing" 60 or even 100 miles an hour on a straight road somebody can get hurt. I'm not stupid to corner on those speeds with a truck. I just want my car to perform to it's best, that's it."

As for getting hurt at 60-100 mph, most fatalities happen in that speed range. I don't really care when people hurt themselves, just don't take anyone with you.

It says the model tested is an SR5. I think the base engine for both the SR5 & Limited was the V6.

Drive your rig at between 6,500 and 11,000 feet....then complain about power.

I learned early on after moving to Denver that 80MPH was considered "respectable" for this behemoth.
