Well, I guess it'll be more healthy for me just to enjoy this vehicle as it is. It's a great truck, no complaints, but I always want to get something more out of things I own...
I'll stay with the stock for now and try to take good care of it, so that it resells at a good price
I'm beginning to understand that I'll need 2 vehicles - one for the city and another for hardcore offroading. This runner is stuck in the middle...

Idk, its an auto, a heavy truck. its not meant for speed.
As far as reliability goes, its a great motor, and a great truck.
I have a 5speed 3.0L 4runner and its SLOW!!!!!!!!
My mom has a auto 3.4L 4runner and its sweet to drive, except for the auto part. Eventhough, that motor has got me drooling for a 3.4 swap. All i am saying is the motor you have is not a bad one. It puts out a decent amount of power.
If you really want more power, you can look into the supercharger for the 3.4.
And for the 5-speed swap, is this something you would plan on doing? If so take into consideration the amount of the tranny, rebuild if needed, all the tools needed, problems you might/will run into and the time it is going to take.
I would put that all into consideration before you jump into a swap.

Well, I'm not planning to race anything, but it sucks when you reach 60 miles in 12 seconds... While a manual tranny does that in 7 secs. And concerning the wear on tranny... I'm not a speed-freak, racing my truck all day long. I might want to race a bit once in a week, but when I want to do that, I want to feel some power.. Considering Toyota build quality, I doubt that that kind of handling will do any harm to this truck in the nearest future.
Conserning driving it offroad - if I wanted to have a city truck - I would have bought QX4 or something of that sort. I'm not planning to stay only on road with a 4Runner and rear diff lock

Not sure where you got that 7 second figure for a manual tranny, (maybe it was supercharged? 2WD?) but if it was from a magazine, remember they didn't own the truck & could abuse it all they want. Sticks are fun to drive, but unless you can change it yourself, clutches are expensive to replace.
Toyota is known best for reliability, rarely do they build the fastest (at least not in the U.S) in their class. A Supercharger is the best upgrade if you want more speed but check here first: http://www.gadgetonline.com/Super.htm
As with most things there are consequences & compromises.
Unless you have a lot of time & $$$$ invested in your ride, it is best to get a 4Runner that already has a stick.

As for getting hurt at 60-100 mph, most fatalities happen in that speed range. I don't really care when people hurt themselves, just don't take anyone with you.
