Funny...........been through a 100 of these threads and prepare to hear the
unbelievable, the crazy and some reasonable thrown in!
15 sounds low to me..........I keep my engine stock and get 17- 20 depending on how I drive and at what speed.
I added air intake mods etc and my mileage tanked.
Reset everything , drive under 70 and get good mileage for a truck with marginal power.

tips :
Driving over 70 makes a 3rd gen 3.4 AT 4runner guzzle gas.
Slow down and watch your needle slow down.
with only 18.5 gallon tank.........your at the station all the time and you can literally watch the gauge drop.

Good tune up , throttle body cleaning and stock size tires really helps.
My buddy HAD to have those huge tires............been hating life ever since gas wise.

Dudes are correct. ......I've driven 65 in my 99 4.3 AT runner and it really gives great mileage. When gas was 3.50 a gallon last summer , I was driving 65 in the right lane along with many others and getting great mileage.
Too bad it can add crazy time to a trip!

That said, I sea foamed it this afternoon and it runs so much smoother. Still a slight bit of hesitation but maybe 20% of what was there. I noticed 2 things. i have an exhaust leak at the drivers side manifold to down pipe and a pin hole leak at the pass side down pipe to drivers side down pipe. (I have duals running down each side of the tranny connecting at the drivers side at the back of the bell housing.) Out of that hole came a thick jet black liquid. I will re sea foam tomorrow.

ya see...ya'll can sit here and ponder on how to get better MPG's all night...and still not break 20mpg's.

my college buddies are driving full size dodge diesel's on 36's and 37's

they all got around 400hp and 850lb ft of torque

they all have extended cab shortbed '98.5-'02 24valve cummins.

they are all 5spd and one 6spd.

and they ALL get around 24-26mpg's on the highway..(corrected mpg's..since they're running oversize tires)



THAT RIGHT THERE...is why i'm going back to diesel as soon as i get the chance.

Those AT tires aren't helping your cause. If you switch to a highway tire, i bet your mileage goes up. Check your tire pressure also.

Ya, I'm envious! So, what kinda mpg's do they get in town?? Is there a mid size or full size SUV that comes with a diesel??? I'm not talking VW Tourage or some bs like that.

Right! Forgot to do that before the trip! I usually pack em up hard up to 45psi! Why no Toyota diesels here? Seems a mid size suv should do 30mpg??

These trucks get crappy MPG no matter how you play it. I stopped calculating around town, because it makes me sad to only get max 150 miles to a tank... On the highway cruising at 55, I can milk it for 19-20mpg.

Once I get a super charger, roof rack, and 285's, it will be truly depressing.

A safc might be a worthwhile purchase. I bet our A/F ratios are in the 11's.

i am a dad so that's probably why i drive like a dad. that trip was also on a 60mph highway the whole trip so i was going the speed limit. i don't drive under the speed limit, even to save gas. i was just showing what a slower speed does for mileage.

most late 90's suv's and trucks got bad gas mileage. does anyone remember what gas cost back then? i do... around $1.30/gallon. so why would manufacturers put lots of effort ($$$) into good fuel economy? they started to make cars more efficient when the cost of gas went up and people started to want the good mileage. thats why new vehicles have way more power and get better mileage, cause thats what the people want.

Good point...the good old days... I remember being outraged when gas got over a DOLLAR per gallon!

fyi- i wouldn't air up your tires past the mfr's max recomendation. you might help you gas mileage some but you will be wearing your tires out pretty quick. the tread center will bulge out like a balloon and you'll be riding on a smaller area which will cause it to wear faster. there's also same safety concerns with that. nitrogen filled tires supposedly give you better all around performance, including better fuel mileage, so they say.

This side of the pond maybe, but growing up in England, I remember our family cars getting 30+mpg all the time. I had a factory turbo charged cavalier from '94 that would return 32mpg at 70mph. It was a massive culture shock when I moved to Michigan 9 years ago. My wifes "economical" 3.0 Voyager was getting 19mpg.

You must have some engine issues because 150 miles to a tank is not normal unless you have 37s on stock gears. Mine was getting 120-150/tank and I did an induction cleaning a few months ago and now I'm getting 225-275/tank. Miles per tank is pretty inaccurate, but I went form ~10 mpgs combined to about 16 and I get about 18-19 on road trips.
