alternator removal

Can somebody give me the steps to removing the alternator? I don't have the slightest clue. All I know is that you loosen a bolt to give the belt some slack. What about putting it back in? Is it hard and do you have to do anything to make sure the belt is at the right tension?

Never done it, thought I have looked at it, I do believe your distributor cap will have to come off at least, perhaps the whole distributor. That is, unless the alt can be dropped out of the engine bay...

not too hard. me and jjdeenen just took his off a few weeks ago. i dunno about your year. im not techy so bear with the "terms". loosen the bolt that goes on the curved arm. so you can pivot the altenator on the bottom bolt. get some slack ont he belt, and take it off. take off the bottom bolt and there you have it. no more altanator. but now, the tricky part is getting it out of the engine bay! on jjdeneens 20r, it was a tight squeeze coz of his new power assist steering system. i had to like turn it upside down, and sqeeze it past some hoses and all that good shiet.

i dont know how easy or hard it is on your engine, but yeh. it was easier with two of us (me and jj) , especially getting someone to hold the bolt with a wrench while jj loosened the nut. same goes for putting the altanator in and pulling it back to give the belt some tension.

mind you, we did it on a 20r, so things may be diff for other engines.

oh and make sure you remember where the wires went.
maybe jj can ring in and give more advice

alternator removal

its real easy to get it out if you take out the distributer and unbolt the power steering pump off the engine. i had to do that to get it out of my 82 4x4 . there was no other way to get it out because the alternator was to big to fit. the radiator fan shroud makes it worse to. take distributer cap off so you can remember which way your rotor pionts to get timig rite.
