I just bought a 99 4runner A/T. While looking the truck over I attempted to put it in 4hi and when I grabbed the lever it almost felt attached to nothing. The only time I felt some resistance was when I pulled straight back and it didn't go into 4hi. I couldn't even get 4lo. I honestly couldn't even tell where the lever was.

Eventually a friend who came along got it into 4hi and it did function.

I am new to 4wd trucks but am an avid car enthusiast. I have driven, and used the 4wd in two other yotas( one was a 95 pickup and the other an 04 pickup) and I can tell you the lever in my 4runner feels nothing like those.

From searching I see there isn't really any linkage that can go bad because the selector feeds into the t-case directly. Being kind of a noob I am asking you guys what could be the issue?

More of an issue of not knowing it was a "J" pattern, however.

I did a quick search, but did not really see anything offhand that seemed to discuss your problem, or showed a good pic of the shifter.

Free bump, though.
