96 4runner won't completely turn off

Hi,
Looking for some help.
'96 4runner won't completely turn off when I take the key out.
E-brake light and seatbelt dash lights stay on. Oil light also comes on after about a second.
If the fan is on, it will stay on.
Alarm will not sound if the lights are still on.

No mods have been done to the radio.
Just replaced the ignition switch, and that did not fix the problem.

Any ideas?

Some back ground here ??

New vehicle to you ??

Was working just fine and problem just started??

It is just a guess from the facts so far but it seems like the electrical part of the ignition switch is not turning off all the way.

Alarm malfunction causing this issue ??

another circuit grounding through the light circuit.

The first thing to do is pull the GAUGE fuse while the fault is occurring. If the lights go out, fault is in key switch circuit. If they stay on, it's a leakage from somewhere. Alarm is always first suspect.

If they do stay on, then go ahead and pull each of these fuses in turn: TURN, 4WD, ECU-IG, ACC, and WIPER. These are the fuses on the same key switch circuit leg as the GAUGE fuse is, and the most likely to be providing the fault. If you can figure out where the alarm gets its power, pull that one, too. Hopefully one of these will cause the lights to go out, and point you in the direction of the fault. There were no factory alarms in '96, just dealer/port add-ons, so I can't help with how those are wired.

I'd do all this with the fan left running. Should make it easier to detect. (Fan relay is also fed from GAUGE fuse).

Did you change the electrical part of the key switch, or maybe they just changed the cylinder not understanding the issue?
