Is it possible that the Denso electrodes are not as durable as the NGK's and that's why there was greater wear? You'd think that the spark energy would be greater on the Passenger side since the coil packs sit directly on top of the plugs and therefore they would show greater wear.

My money's on the Denso plugs being less durable. NGK plugs are spoken of in almost hallowed tones by a lot of tuners. Denso not so much so.

I don't know, that's a good question. I came to the same conclusion as you about expecting more wear on the coilpack side, but obviously that is not happening. My original hypothesis was that the drivers side bank was running slightly leaner because it is fed by the second fuel rail in the series, but I'm not sure if cylinder temp would affect electrode erosion or even if it is running leaner.

I just took a look at the Densos I had in for 6k before I swapped on the SC and there is so little wear that I can't definitively state whether they are wearing evenly or not. What did your platinums look like when you removed them and how many miles were on them?

I think there was about 24K on the plugs when I took them out. I really don't remember. They looked perfectly normal for that many miles. Slight dusky brown color with a touch of wear on the center electrode. Textbook perfect wear indication of the correct plugs for the application.

I just recieved the plugs. They seem to be the right spec (BKR5EIX-11) however when looking at them they seem to be the single electrode design. Every picture I've seen of the plugs for the 4Runner shows a duel electrode design. Those of you who are running iridiums, do you have a single or duel electrode? I spoke to a local mechanic who was proficient in toyotas and he advised me that if I ran a single electrode design it might cause incomplete combustion and produce hesitation...

Your plugs are fine. It's just the Iridium design. I have them in mine with nooooo problems. As usual....another sharp mechanic.

Thanks for all the help and advice. I went ahead and installed them. The car seemed to run slightly rough until I reset the EFI by pulling the small 15a fuse(3rd from bottom in vertical fuse section in underhood fuse box) and putting it back 15 min later. Once I did that it was S-I-L-K. Very happy with them.
