Where those stories come from is that synthetics have such excellent cleaning properties that they can actually create leaks by removing gunk that is holding dried out seals and gaskets in place... Plus, there are properties in dino oil which can cause seals and gaskets to swell, and the synthetics don't have those properties. These things doesn't happen very often, usually on poorly maintained vehicles. But, that's how the rumours get started.

Guys,
It's been 4 days since I put in the MT-90 and now i can definitely say that this stuff *is* the reason why my 4runner's notchy shifting has all but been eliminated. If theres any notchiness, it is *very* minimal and always in the morning (cold temps).

I've got a newbie-mechanic question...what do you do with the old fluid? I know you can take used motor oil to many different places, but what about tranny-fluid (or gear oil, radiator fluid, etc.).

i asked the same question to the pep boys people where i throw my stuff away. they said it all goes into the same sump. i thought that was not right so i called jiffy lube and they said the same thing.

I would bet they put the radiator fluid in another tank. The waste oil can be recycled or used for fuel oil. We have a shop here that actually burns their waste oil for heat.

Bob, if you think the redline MT-90 is great now, just try adding a 1/4 quart and see what you think. I really think a lot of the initial morning notchiness happens because the fluid has been sitting rather than circulating...and overfilling to the factory level seems to help the fluid reach critical areas faster. I've been "overfilled" with MT-90 for almost 20K miles now with no side effects.

I put in an extra 1/4 qt and it seems to be shifting a wee bit smoother. Unfortunately this morning, I couldn't do a really fair apples-to-apples comparison for cold morning shifting b/c its so dang warm in LA these past 2 mornings. But as I said, its a little smoother.

I was going to get some Redline a while back when I was in England but no one would ship it to my military address over there and no one in England had ever heard of it. Glad you posted this I had kinda forgotten about that on my To-DO list. My 2nd Gen is always notchy going into 2nd and if your rolling slowly like at a stoplight first can be a pain too. If your not moving it's fine. I'll have to find me some of that stuff pretty soon.

All this good talk about it, I'm gonna have to get some.
I'm planning to do some major maintenance on my own...with the 90k mark coming up.
One quick question...I'm trying to picture where the clutch flywheel is and if it is in the fluid or not.
I've always had some audible squeeling / slippage sound when taking off from a stop. I wonder if this would help...

Are you guys putting it in both your tranny and transfer case, or just tranny?I just ordered six qts. for my two trucks from myoilshop.com(their only 20 mins from me)I was just going to do my tranny on each, but I think I didn't get enough.The manuel calls for 4-7 pts.(2-4Qts). How much is it taking on your fillups?

I just put it in my manual tranny. I have Amsoil in everything else. The manual tranny fluid capacity for a V6 3.4L 4runner is 2.3 quarts. I put an extra 1/4 qt per recommendation of 3.4 (thanks, great tip).

Bob, glad to see that the overfill is working for you. The only strange part about the MT-90 is that shifting quality seems to slightly deteriorate over time. I would recommend refilling the tranny and transfer case with MT-90 every 15K miles (rather than 30K). I definately notice a slight improvement in shifting after a fresh fill--I'm guessing that some of the additives get used and the shifting quality seems to slightly taper off. I've noticed this in the 4Runner as well as previous vehicles.
BTW, for those following this thread, DO NOT use MT-90 in the differentials. Redline makes a 75W-90 gear oil that is perfect for the diffs. The MT-90 (and MTL) are designed for use in the transmission and transfer case. Check out the details on redlineoil.com, they also have great customer service if you ever have questions.
