it is most likely just the angle but it looks like his "new" tundra pads are thinner than the "new" 4runner pads. the tundra caliper does appear to be larger, or at least shaped differently at the bottom. i may have to head up to the dealer so i can see the difference in the piston size.

Optical illusion....

It's because the rotor is so much bigger it makes the pads look smaller in width.

Someone needs to get a shot of the rotor with a ruler on it. That way you guys can see the difference.

i actually have some used tacoma rotors out in my garage, they are off a 15" wheels truck but will probably be the same diameter. i will try to get my hand on some calipers and measure them too.

Actually, in America, there is only 1 type of DOT5 fluid. In Europe, there is another type of DOT5 fluid. In America, DOT5 fluid is silicone based, and used primarily in specialized applications, mostly racing and military vehicles. The silicone based fluid is not compatible with DOT3/4 systems. Early formulations of DOT5 would eat through rubber seals. Recent formulations have fixed this problem (supposedly). However, DOT5 is still not good for vehicles with anti-lock brakes. DOT5.1 is a different animal, and is compatible with DOT3/4 systems, but tends to be very pricey and not easy to find.

In Europe, they never really recognized DOT5 (silicone based) as a brake fluid. Rather, they call DOT5 what we call DOT5.1. This, as you can imagine, causes many headaches for owners of some European vehicles, where the owner's manual declares "USE DOT5 only" but is referring to the European DOT5, or the US DOT 5.1.

But, in our vehicles, DOT4 is the best fluid to use for the brakes.

Here is a little upgrade for all you doing the swap.
Actually, Drilled rotors are no upgrade...its sort of a downgrade. Drilled rotors were invented because brake pads used to release a gas, preventing them from fully seating on the rotor. The holes allowed the gas to escape. Today, brake pads no longer produce that gas, so the holes are no longer needed. All they do is look good. But they do take away some disk surface that can be used to stop your truck faster...

EDIT: I forgot to mention that the holes make your disk crack easier..

So I never even thought of that when I installed them.... stupid me...

So off I go to the dirt lot to see what the ABS would do with the new brakes...

Guess what? It works perfectly!!! Maybe even better than before.

So, in conclusion - ABS - OK!!!!!

i DISAGREE...

lemme start my story. 90 4runner. OEM type rotors would warp, no matter what every 10-12 months.

after getting severe vibrations whenever i hit the brakes, was a sure sign the rotors needed replacing or turning (yeah i know...)

finally, when the last OEM type set couldnt be turned anymore, i went with genuine cross drilled brembos.

that was what... 5-6 years ago now?!?

no vibrations. gone through 2 sets of front pads. no cracks either. havent had a need to turn them either.

now these are FORGED holes in the rotors, not DRILLED after they were made.

now fast forward to 2004. in my subaru STi, you know about the brembo brake setup in there.

my problem with it is when it gets wet. driving freeway speeds and hitting brake pedal and it feels like i have no brakes. i mean i freaked when it was pouring and a car cut in front of me in the freeway!

a second later, i hit the pedal again and it seems to be back to normal.

i tested and repeated that. it seems that when it gets wet, the water between the pads and rotor... well doesnt compress well.

i know when these front rotors go, i'm with genuine cross drilled or slotted.

I don't see any reason why the ABS would not have worked.

Ask them what year each of those came from.
Both should fit fine but you would like to get the newest version (better stopping power).

As long as you now have the 16" rims, they should fit fine.

The larger ones are probally from tundras w/ the 16" wheels and the smaller ones from the 15" wheels. I'd go larger...
