3.4 Head Gasket Project

hross recommended doing the sensors while the intake is off. I searched more and see that it's not necessary. So what's with this wire? How does it fail? Corrosion?

I keep seeing people say they have to remove the intake manifold to replace the FPR, I am just wondering what the intake manifold is??? if you look at the top picture on this page there 3 parts before you get to the manifold one is the throttle body then the upper plenum and the lower plenum then you have the intake manifold spanning between the heads what all did you take off?? I remember having my engine out and there was no reason to remove the manifold as far as I can remember... Throttle body and both sections of the plenum but not the manifold...

Correction: Plenums or runners, not the manifold itself. I've mostly dealt with single piece intakes where one refers to the one piece as an intake manifold. I looked up the word "manifold" to get a better idea of its origin and the wiki has a whole lot math relating to curves and tubes (stuff I don't understand or have forgotten): http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Manifold

a plenum is a ductway or air box chevy and ford put the throttle body directly on the manifold but toyota put the plenum in to more evenly distribute the air and creating the long ram on our trucks, this causes the HP to be derived at 3200-4200rpm. if they had put a short ram this number would be lower and not in the optimal performance range of this engine...

Well my $500 worth of parts arrrived from Toyota today. I got the complete upper rebuild kit. There are so many things in the package I am not sure where to start. There are shims the size of nickle with one side brass and the othe side rubber (see second pic). It looks like I will be going back to the FSM to see what everything is. I did purchase a new PCV, grommet and knock sensor wire. I went back and forth with the head bolts but ended up getting stock Toyota bolts and washers. Just the bolts and washers were just under $100. I am sure if I shopped I could have bought aftermarket bolts but I feel good about using Toyota parts.
The kit also came with valve stem seals so I guess I will be changing those out as well. Any tips on cleaning the valves if I have them out? Or should I just change the shims and not monkey with the valves? Does everyone re-use the keepers?
Here is the reason for all this work.

Damn--that doesnt look good--??
Those brass and rubber things are for the valve covers where the bolts go--you will figure it out when you get going on it......
Good luck
