2wd Automatic Capabilities?

My 98 4runner is 2wd and an automatic. I've done a lot of reading and searching around but found little information on just how capable my truck can become.

I guess what I'm asking is what am I limited to doing in modifications for offroading. I read that having an automatic is alright but from what I read all the automatics where 4wd.

To put it simply, I want to know if I'll be capable of any decent offroading, or if I'm better off just turning her into an offroad speed demon rather than a rock crawler of sorts?

Any info would be much appreciate and if I missed anything I'n my searches that answers this, please load up on the "newb didn't search" complaints

You could always put a locker in the rear end

It's possible...but I'd always be afraid of getting stuck. turn your 2wd into a pre runner and buy a beater 4x4.

I don't mind turning it into a prerunner, it's just the fact that I go to school in a climate that receives 3ft of snow on a regular basis during winter, total snowfall of probably around 15-20ft a season.

Turning her into a prerunner wouldn't interfere with that at all would it?

NVM stupid question, I searched and figured it out. Ignore that haha.

I do want to clarify though, my understanding is that a Prerunner is just a 2wd 4runner that has a rear locker and all the 4wd mods its just a prerunner though because its 2wd?

don't sell it!! at least keep it as a DD. I DD my 2wd, way better mileage and pep. pre runner can mean a lot of things...most of the time it just means some sort of truck that you race in the desert. more dirt and speed less rocks and crawling. you'll see 4wd "pre runners", but 2wd is a more popular platform. if you live where there's a lot of snow I definitely wouldn't get a locker...I don't know for sure cause I don't have one, but lots of people on here say a rear locker in the snow is pretty squirrely. as you've been shown, you can definitely take it off road as it is. eventually though you're gunna want power to 4 wheels.

Well I plan to keep her, I do wan't to make modifications to her though and be able to go off road and whatnot but It'll be at least a couple years before I'll be able to afford another vehicle. At the very least, I want her to look sweet.

So would you suggest that I just personalize her and make her a city/Long Distance Travel vehicle and save my money till I get a 4wd and put all my dough into that for offroading?

And if keeping her a city/ldt vehicle is what's best, what can I do for modifications as 99% of offroading mods would be pointless?
