2003 4runner stero best?

Is it best for the money to get the 6cd changer with the 10 speakers. Or is there something better by aftermarket
Thanks

I think the stock JBL is awesome! Others will disagree, but I am not a radiohead, NPR & Rush on the JBL sounds great. I have the ten speakers, but not the ten CD changer. Every aftermarket stereo that I have ever bought (Kenwood, Sony, Blaupunkt) has broken after about a year, every stock stereo that I have owned worked until the day I sold the car.

aftermarket will always sound better. And ive had completely different experiences with aftermarket. Ive put them in when ive first got the car and it last till i sold it. Sony and blaupunkt are crap in aftermarket. Anything sony sells in car audio breaks or overheats. Ive had alpine and they last a long time. The eclipse headunit come with a 3 year warranty if installed by a authorized dealer. Just food for thought. My aftermarket sounds so much better it doesnt even compare to stock.

I've just replaced my non-JBL stereo with a Clarion 835mp w/ the 6 disk changer. I put the changer in the hidden pocket inside the glove compartment, the same spot the factory changer would go into. I had to cut out part of the inside comparetment because the changer was too big, eventhough it is one of the smallest CD changers on the market. I wonder how toyota can fit a 10disk changer in there.

I just installed my pioneer cd player w/ 4 pioneer 3-way speakers. sounds absolutely awesome... and this is after i had this pioneer deck & speaker combo in another car for 3 years. i would recommend pioneer for price/performance/durability any day.

I love the JBL too! the in-dash 6 disc awesome since you don't have to use up space somewhere else.
It sounds pretty good to me cranked up too. Prodigy sounds great on it

I have the JBL-w/6 disk and ten speakers. In the front it sounds awesome, especially with Dave cranked up. The rear however sounds like there is no juice. I guess they are looking into the fix, it has something to do with the amp for the sub.

I use the secret compartment to store something else.

Plus you also get a lot of new features with aftermarket deck. My Pioneer DEH-8500MP for example can play CDs as well as MP3s. It also mutes the sound when my cell phone rings. Small things, but very convinient!

Hey Slib77, you're right. I turned the fade all the way to the back speakers and it seems like it's not getting any juice back there. Turning the fader all the way to the front speakers sounds great... is there a TSB for this and should I wait to go into the dealer?

If you are into mp3, & consider replace head unit also. May be consider a mp3/cd/cd-r/cd-rw head unit + a mp3/cd/cd-r/cd-rw changer.

I have an Apline 7894 mp3/cd/cd-r/cd-rw HU + an Alpine S634 6-mp3/cd/cd-r/cd-rw changer. I get ~100 mp3 song, with best VBR rate, on single cd-r. Total of ~700 mp3 song on both HU & changer combined withou changing cd-r.

That's ~50 cds

If your going to get a Limited model, you are pretty much locked in to a JBL or the NAV.
I have the JBL and am somewhat, unimpressed. My complaints are the following: The sub is worthless, the rear speakers are not equal to the front spreakers (though turning off surround sound mode does help, somewhat), but my royal complaint is that it just plain out doesn't get loud and isn't very dynamic. Sure, it sounds great..... But, the system falls flat on it arse when your want it to get loud.
I am by no means a member of the boom boom crowd, but I like to turn it up when I have the windows down and I'm driving across the bridge to the beach on a pretty day. The JBL needs a better amp, period, that is it's flaw.

When I had my 300ZX it came with the Bose system... I bought it with a tape deck and it sounded "okay." I pulled the head and installed an aftermarket, but kept the "Bose" speakers... Wow, it sounded a lot better and not just because it was a CD player.

...WTF Toyota, no MP3 player and no way to "simpily" add XM radio ? jeez. I see amps in my future.

fwiw: I am a big fan of the Clarion Pro-Audio line.

?omend the indash changers... I have two friends, one with an A6 Audi and another with an 03 accord and they both have always had problems with the indash changers. The Honda was less than 2 months old and his went... Just food for thought...

Ive always been a an alpine/infiniti/Eclipse fan as far as aftermarket audio go, you can't go wrong there.

I'm the total opposite. I like everything factory stock. Maybe something like a brush guard(maybe) that can just bolt on and take off or tires...otherwise I want it all Toyota OEM.

The reason is that I see alot of older Toyotas and whatever that have been kept up and the ones that attract me and seem to be the most valuable are the clean, stock, just-as-it was when new cars and trucks.
Someone restored an old FJ on this board I think- totally stock and it looked amazing. Anyway, that's how I want my 4Runner to be in 15 years.
The radio is such a large piece of the interior that I really want that to be OEM for sure.

Anyway, I like the sound so I don't feel like I'm loosing anything.

Then again, all the 3rd gens with Arbs and lifts look so awesome...

First Toy:

I have no idea if they have a TSB on this. I heard Toyota is aware of the problem.

We shall see.

I have an HX-D10 Limited pre-amp only HU from the Pro line with the Ce-net changer. That all runs through a Clarion active x-over.

Very pure sound. Very dynamic. Impressed the chit out of all who listen.

Nice part was I picked up the HU at $300 in a close out (original MSRP nearly $900 !)
