BFG MTs (255/85r16) Advice/opinions?

15" tires are the only tires measured in standard (inches)....other sizes are measured in metric....I THINK there are a couple sizes in metric on a 15" wheel, but I'm not positive...

yeah, you're looking for the size (in 16's) of 255/85R16 right. Thats as close as you get to 33X10". They are actually around 33.4" tall 10" wide. They're almost an inch taller than regular 33X12.5"...
Some of the brands available in that size are BFG MT, Cooper STT, Cooper S/T, Cooper S/T-C. I'm not sure what other brands have that size. BigO does, I guess Wal-mart does... I don't think you need any lift to fit them, you do on a Taco though. Did you read that right up on the Cooper STTs. That looks like a much more aggressive tire than the BFGs

I run 255/85/16s on my 03 taco. I've been really happy with the tire. They do a great job in the mud and they aren't nearly as loud as I thought they would be. For comparision, they are quieter than any aftermarket exaust I've ever heard.
On the downside (if you call it that), they are a big tire. At full lock they rub on my frame up front and I'm still doing minor trimming of the rear fender flare to fit the back under compression. Also, before I regeared there was a loss of power. It wasn't a big deal and it's not noticable at speed. However, getting moving was sort of a pita with my stick shift and traffic jams sucked even more. I have pics:

Mud tires do fine on the highway but street tires don't do good in mud. I'm on my 2nd set on BFG MT, got 50,000 miles out of the first set, had the 2nd set now for a few years. Noise isn't bad at all, my BMW has about as much road noise as my truck. The muds really do good on the highway during heavy rain because they don't hydroplane much. You do need to get them balanced alot though and rotate often. I rotate every oil change, 3000 miles.

Good article! And having read through it, I am choosing to stay away from the 255/85/16 size tire because of the type of trails and roads in Colorado. Thanks for the info!

Really good thread everyone!!! I am in bad need of replacing my Tires and was in the same boat looking for 33x10.5 on a 16. SO If i decided to switch to a 15" rim, what exactly would that entail? Does it throw anything important off in any other aspects??? I am thinking this would be easier so i can get the size i want and not have it be a problem after that. Any advice?????

ya interco truxus M/T. 255/85/16 , i wish these size [tall skiny] were available in all-terrain type treads. also a 34x10.5x17 [say 285/85/17] would be a great size. with 5;29's in the diffs, the 255's are a little short.

BFG 255/85 R16 - observations
I've "upsized" from my Revo's (about 31.5" dia) to these taller tires and just love 'em. The BFG MT's are SOOO much more improved off-road it's ridiculous. BUT.... even though I thought I did lots of research before hand, there are a couple things I've experienced:
1. These are an E rated tire. Not sure if it's that, but the ride is a little more harsh than before. Not huge difference, just a little. Reduced tire pressure helps.
2. Gas mileage seems to have suffered some. Might need to look into maybe changing my gears from 4.10 to 4.88.
3. Rubbing. So far I've trimmed the front wheel-well inside the front bumper and the rear wheel-well mudflap. (It looks like the front plastic piece of the rear wheel-well is also being rubbed just minor... and I think I need to trim more of the inside front wheel plastic/bumper still. No problems at all with pinch-weld seams though, yet)
Would I do it again? So far, absolutely "YES"... these tires kick-butt in the dirt/mud (which is where this truck lives 70%+ of the time)
