Well from what I understand is that you can fit a 3.4L a 94 yota when removing the 3.0. I was just wondering if you have to modify the body in order for it to fit. I was told that you have to put a hood scoop in order for it to fit correctly. Is this true? One site says yes and the other says no...
I am trying to figure my cost and what all is involved before I decide on taking this on. HELP! Thanks

You can either put a hood scoop or a body lift (1.5" I think? Anyone?) I went with the hood scoop. Cut away some of the hood. Other then that you really don't have to modify that much. You use the stock engine mounts, may have to trim a little metal off of them. Mechanically its just bolt on kind of deal.

Ok, thank you... I already have 4 inch lift on it, is it going to be anytrouble if its an automatic, we might just do the tansmition while we are at it.

the only issue with the automatics is if you take the auto 3.4L and put it into the 5spd. 94. Due to the ECM (ECU). If you already have an auto in your 94 then those 3.4 autos are very common. My advice would be to get the entire donor 3.4 vehicle, cause I got the engine from a yard, and they cut the wiring up, left out accessories that I needed. It would have been easier to just yank it all out and put in the entire assembly into my 4Runner.

Oh and the transmissions are the same bolt pattern. So no issue there. if you are running 5spd. then you use the 3.0 throw out bearing and the 3.4 clutch kit.

Being that you're in California, you might have some issues in getting it smogged and certified. I would suggest you read through Cadman's swap thread and all the fun he went through to get it certified

Thanks, yeah that was going to be my next question. I was told you have to get permission by the refery and have just about everything out of the doner truck, comp. and stuff, I am starting to wonder if its worth it.

I have not gone through the ref yet so my opinion may change when I do, but its not that bad. Everything has to be the same as when that motor rolled out of the plant. You can not modify ANYTHING to through the ref. The exhaust can not change in any way which is the hardest part because that is considered tampering. Even if you change things that are california (EO) compliant, the ref will fail you which is odd but that is what I was told over the phone.

For example, I was told that if I added the Downey headers(the ref knew them by name), or an aftermarket CAT, I would fail but any average 97 Runner would pass even though that is the same motor that I have. After I get my inspection however, I am good to add anything that is legal just like any other 97 3.4 vehicle.

What makes it even harder is is you call 4 times, you WILL get 4 different answers. Go find the ref that will inspect YOUR truck and talk to him about any questions that you have.

Especially being in People's Republic of California, I would but a whole donor truck/Runner that has been wrecked so you have everything.

Oh, it's a bit of a headache, especially when it's your daily driver, but the truck is so much more fun once you're done. I have zero regrets about doing mine and I've put over 58,000 miles on it since the swap.

By the way, the lift to allow the engine to clear the hood has to be a body lift, not a suspension lift. Either that or you whack a hole in the hood.

lol... yeah I dont want that. I have called a few people and they all have told me different stuff.... I want to swap the trany too, and I dont have a body lift so I will have to do that, I dont know seems like alot for an old truck. I just cannot part with it. I t is super clean and I just got a new paint job cause I hit a few deer...lol so any extra info is great.

i have a 5 speed in my 89 toyota. ive got a 3.4 coming my way. what all do i have to do besides shave the motor mounts. i already have a 3" body lift. is there ANYTHING else i need?

I dont know what you mean by shave the motor mounts.

I usually dont say this to people but seriously there is tons of information here on just about every step along the way and what you will need.

I would say that the thing you need is a few evening of reading. Then come back with specific questions and there are many guys, including myself, that would be more than happy to help as we were helped as well.

To expect someone to type everything you need is a bit much though.

and at least make your own thread rather than taking over someone elses.

if i wanna keep my 3.0 5spd...do i have to get the 3.4 with the 5spd or will the auto motor work too

it is SOOOO much easier to do 5spd to 5spd, or auto to auto. even more so if you manage to find ONE vehicle with EVERYTHING that you will need. also, i didn't have to put on a body lift or a hood scoop. i had to cut a small section of the hood support, but never actually put a hole in my hood. i don't know what the variable is, but sometimes you don't have to modify all that much.

x2 what dntsdad said... read the stickies; elvota's, mt. goat's, breknraj's threads are invaluable resources. andy zook's web site is great as well. pretty much everything you need to know outside of wiring is already on this site, and the wiring is different from year to year, so nobody can really give you any advance help on that. too many different possible combinations.

As far as I know the auto and 5spd. have the same bolt pattern. The problem arises when some of the auto don't have the pilot hole for the clutch. It seems to be a rare problem but if I end up saying it will work for you, my luck will end up that it doesn't work for you. Like Screamer said it is way easier to just go straight across. Manula to manual and auto to auto.

dntsdad the reason some have to shave the motor mounts is there is a block drain that sticks out and it interfers witht the 3.0 motor mounts. It's not hard to take a 4" grinder and cut out a little square piece.
