Question 3.4 ecu

As I have posted in other threads, my swap has hit a snag- the engine runs but really rough, runs well in open loop and I am getting a cnstnt 11volts at my OBD data port....I have checked my wiring many times- I think the ECU might be toast. SO I got a buddy topick me up another ECU from the local toyota wrecker but it is a 1998 4runner 4x4 M/T where as my stuff came from a 1999 Tacoma 4x4 M/T. From what I can tell it should be similar enough to run? THe full FSM I have covers 1998-2000. Anyone know for sure?

NO, 96-98 are different from 99+
You will also need the harness to go with that 99 ECU.

If you do replace your 3.4L harness/ and the 98 ECU......how much????

Are the pins the same ECU wise??? the only way to tell that is to look at both schematics for both the older and new harnesses and see what the pins are. If they are the same then you can use it if not your gonna have to either pin them out to work or get a new harness. That also depends if the plugs are the same. Also one thing that is gonna hold you back using a different ECU is the sensors. Are they the same??? I bet not. Toyota changed things just about evey two years thats why getting a running donor rig is the BEST thing to get when doing this swap. For how easy things bolt right up the 3.4 can be a pain in the a$$ and quote the "$$" part

Good luck. Hope it all works out for you

Ya I know what you speak of.... the mechanical side was easy, enjoyable actually...the wiring has been a pain. I got everything originally from a '99 tacoma ( supposedly running) but I think the ECU I got was pooched- I am confident in my wiring but it runs like a$$ and the red flag to me is when I hooked up the OBD port I get 11volts constant at the datalink wire. SO I grabbed this 98 4Runner 4x4 M/t ecu up today - plugs are the same and in the Tacoma FSM I have it puts 98,99,00 years together - my understanding is 95.5-97 is 1st gen, 98-00 is 2nd gen and 01+ is 3rd gen. At the wreckers I saw a 97 ECU - totlly different plugs. I am trying to download a 98 4runner FSM to compre pin outs right now....
If this ECU is no good to me I would let it go - I payed $175can for it...
