Toyota Oil Filter Internal View
Alright, seeing all those cut-open oil filters around the web MADE me do it. But I did learn a great deal. The parts guy told me this was a filter for the new V8's.
I think you will agree this is a unique filter.
A side view of the combination ADBV and bypass, partially removed from the nylon support:
End view of the media:
Filter media in the can. I propped it up with a rock. Plenty of room for flow.
Back plate and media/valve assembly. You can see where the seal seats on the plate. The combination valve makes for a very short oil bypass path, prevents the media from being exposed to bypass pressures and makes for a less expensive manufacture.
The filter media is 1/8 inch thick, yet I can easily blow through it. It seems to be some tough stuff, and hard to pull off the nylon cage. I had to cut & scrape to get to the cage for these pics. The top of the cage is also filter media.
I hope you guys like these. When I told the parts guy that I was going to cut the filter open, he told me he would give me another if I brought the open one back.
I might do the V6 filter next, and if I do I'll post those as well.

My 2003 4Runner came with similar filter 909515-20004.
I went to the dealer to get a new one for next oil change,
but of course they didn't have it and said it's not in his computer.
There is a big differene in this filter and the el cheapo they said was what I needed. Look at link below:

I've decided to go with the NAPA gold filter.
