Kids On The Rocks Needs Help - Sat June 26th

I know this is late notice, but it seems the organizers are having difficulty gathering enough rigs for this worthwhile event. The trails are suitable for stock rigs. The organizers need rigs with passenger seats. Each rig will carry one disabled child and the child's sponsor/guardian. If you are free this weekend come on up. The event also includes a free BBQ.

The event is held off of Hwy 108 above Sonora, CA. Our club will be sending rigs, but we need more. See the request for help below:

"Hello everyone!
Just got a call from Kathy Avery with Mud Sweat and Gears in Sonora.
Every year they have an event for disabled children at the Niagara
Rim trail called Kids on the Rock. This year they have about 75
children and half the number of rigs they need. It turns out that a
number of clubs flaked out to go on another run. I won't say
anything else, but that is wrong! These children are looking forward
to this trip. This is very short notice. The event will be held
this Sat. and Sun. If they can't come up with enough drivers, they
will have to tell half of the kids they cannot go. NOT GOOD! If you
can help please call me ASAP! (831) 246-2809.
I'm going to try to get time off work and Bandage my rolled vehicle to
help these kids. I hope you can find it in your hearts to help as
well. This is a very rewarding experience.
-Jesse Aguilar(831)246-2809 "

BTW, it sounds like the main event for the Kids is going to be on Saturday so it might be OK to come up just for one day. We'll know more about this soon.

Hello,

I've done this event a few years ago, it's alot of fun, the scenery is spectacular and it's for a very good cause. Not to mention the folks at Mud Sweat and Gears are alot of fun to run with. If I were in the USA, I'd definitely be there and help out, but alas.

One fun aspect of doing this event, is the reaction you get from the kids: they rarely get a chance to go out into nature and i enjoyed watching their awe and amazement as we hit the trail. We got to see plenty of rocks, animals, trees and whatever else they could see

The area is loaded with trails, so there's plenty of areas to explore after the run itself. The year i did the event, they even did a night run after the BBQ on Saturday.

Cheers,
Illiana

This sounds like a great event if I lived in Cali I'd be there. Being paralyzed myself I can some what relate to how excited these kids will be to get out and do something they wouldn't have the opportunity to do on their own. I hope you get enough people for this event it sounds very cool.

How late and where do you guys meet?
Seems like the trails will be light duty, will a Land Rover Freelander (3 door) also work? (My girlfriend wants to join)
Also what do we need to bring if we can make it?

EDIT: We will only be able to do the Saturday, will this work?

yes, the run will be doable on a street stock 4x4 with a low range transfer case.

call kathy avery at the number listed on the first post of this thread to exact meeting times.

saturday is the day when the actual run is planned for the kids. some of the club members will camp overnight for a sunday run.

bring everything you need for a day run. but be self sufficient for everything. i believe a planned lunch and dinner for a small donation to help offset costs.

Holy crap, I opened the thread at first because it said something about norther Cal. and I'm from there. Well, turns out this thing is on highway 108, above Sonora, and guess what? That's exactly where I live! I hope I can go.

Do you know if it is the weekend 26th and 27th of June or the next weekend? I'm going to try and get a few of my buddies to go with their vehicles. That would be really great. I love exploring the mountains up here. I bet the trails are going to be some of the never-ending (literally) logging trails in the Stanislaus (sp?) National Forest. It's very beautiful!

Meeting time is 9:30 a.m. Sat morning at the OHV campground. Once you make the turnoff I think I remember seeing signs to the OHV campground.

Below are the directions:
East on Hwy 108 past Pinecrest
Look for forest road 5N01 (may also be signed Eagle Meadow Road) just past mile marker 42
Turn right and go about 300 yards to the intersection with Forest Road 6N24
To reach the Niagara Campground
Keep left on Forest Road 6N24
Cross the bridge at Niagra Creek and Niagara Campground will be on your left
GPS: N38.19.28.6,W119.54.55.5
To reach the Niagara OHV Campground area
Turn right at the 5N01/6N24 intersection
Stay on Forest Road 5N01 and go about two miles to the intersection of Forest Road 5N09
GPS: N38.18.40.7 W119.53.19.1

Hope to see some of you guys there. If you see a blue TJ running around with a Gettin' Off club sticker stop by and say hi. (I'm bringing the TJ since it has a full rear seat.) If you have time to stay until Sunday, we are planning to run the whole Niagara Rim trail in the morning.

Looks like we will make it, just spoke with Matt. Anybody else joining?

My GF is not too happy about getting up early, but she will enjoy it. Hope the Land Rover can make it, so watch out for the Monster Truck!

Yes I will take my Runner as well.

I'm not sure I would advise taking the freelander on the trail. You will probably need a low range.

WHen I spoke with Matt, he thought it would be OK. We'll take it with, if it is not advised when we get there we will just leave it at the starting point.

Is the low range required for climbing or going down as it has Downhill assist on it which work pretty well. Have tested it a few times. I'm concerned with ground clearance and brushes getting to the paintwork. Will take some big pruners with.

It has a removable hardtop (3door only) and we got a soft top for it as well. We will probably use the soft top when we go to Pismo.
