I say the 98-00 4Runners with the E-locker. A locker is going to get you a lot more places than a SFA.

I would think the locker would get you a lot farther than a solid axle. I'm a sucker for old school 4runners though.

I have always wondered how either of them would compare to a mid to late seventies FJ40 Landcruiser though. I have always wanted one of these and would sell my truck for one in a heartbeat.

I know this is a thread about 4runners but...

What are peoples feelings on this: '85 'runner and/or 99 highlander vs. a mid to late seventies FJ40??

I still think that stock, the 4Runner with the E-locker will out wheel the FJ40. You have to remember that the FJ40 came open front and rear so the only advantage it has is the short wheelbase, which isn't always an advantage, and shorter overhang.

E-locked third gen again, no contest.

3.4 v6 and an auto transmission.
Add a marlin crawler t-case conversion
a suspension lift.
Sure you'll hang the front end in the air big time.
But I think you will be tons more capabl;e and comfortable.

Easy!!! 04 4runner w/elocker and IFORCE V8, come on I thought you knew. I even own an 85. A Toyota v8 can get you outta anything.

The FJ40s are great little trucks.

They will not out wheel the locked 4runner.

hijack on

They have an advantage of being heavy, and short, and many came with a power take-off on the tcase to add a mechanical winch.

They have no power, and can have trouble with gravity fed gas, depending on what year you have, and they are open f/r, and have no power steering,

i like them a lot, but at 10 miles a gallon (if ur lucky) they are not for me

Hijack off

Toyota never made such a beast......... no e-locker option

Besides ask Lance if his V8 toy was able to get out of anything........ San diego comes to mind....

So it looks like most agree that the Highlander takes the win for offroading... but which one would win the Paris-Dakar Rally or the Baja1000 (from the factory)... Maybe the V-8 with it's traction control... or maybe a supercharged E-Locker...

the 4bangers would choke on dust...

ah, then maybe the 22re would chug along at a good pace and end up winning by not breaking down... Is the 22re still thought to be the most reliable toyota engine around? with its gear driven transfer, and trusty 5-speed

and hey... I know the mitsubishi runs the paris dakar and wins... I think a toyota would survive it... maybe not at modified truck race speeds but against other stockers... Race On :xmas13:

I've had a stock 22re in a 91, used to race buggies down the sandy S.Canadian river and leave 'em behind... and hoping my ice chest wouldn't fly out the back.

You gotta remember that Mitsubishi is using a Montero IRS+IFS car for that one, and the whole race is desert. And yes, a Toyota would survive it if they modified a model for such a race...

i would have to say that the 2nd gen Hilux Surf/Diesel 4Runner is the best...in 1993-1995 the Hilus Surf/Diesel 4Runner came with an E-Locker and a Limited Slip Diff! though you wont find those in the states...but in Canada and the rest of the world you will. I own one and it came stock with those things.

those never came to canada either...unless its an imported jdm spec.

but yes...3rd gen w/ elocker is the answer to the question. solid font axles cant get you anywhere if your rear is only 1WD...
