After my first mudding trip and dealing with a dead truck in the middle of a mud pit, i started asking around about waterproofing my dist. Nobody seemed to have much info except that it's vented (i'm guessing for the extreme temp change it encounters from the engine heat)

So today i made it submersible.

What you will need
-Tube of sealant
-3 or more feet of rubber hose (same size your charcoal canister uses)
-A few small zip ties

Fist off when you pull the cap, you will see a little vent cap like one of these

This one you have to get a little screwdriver and push the tabs in


This one just slides off

First thing i did was hook up a breather hose


Then ran a bead of RTV sealant along the mating surface


I then zip-tied all the wires just in case..


I ran the breather through the firewall and put some foam insulation on since it's close to the manifold heat


Up into the bottom of the dash and the mod is complete


I have yet to put it to the test, i'll update when i find out how it does underwater. This should prove to be a worthwhile mod

Only step I see missing is gobs of dielectric grease in the wires.

I'm assuming you have a snorkel already so you can get deep enough to have to worry about the distributor before hydrolocking the motor ...

As you can see in the pic i dont have a snorkel yet but i plan on adding one before any more mud boggin, my intake was real close to water level last time

That is one thing I didn't think of, Dielectric grease. That will help keep the water out of the connection between the wires and the cap.

You might also want to refrain from driving into lakes of unknown depth as well

i know you're not running a 4.3. Back when i worked in a shop we saw a lot of cap rotor premature failures do to moisture causing corrosion. So we ran a vacuum hose from the distribitor to a fitting that we installed on the back of the air box. That way anything that dose collect inside the distributer, will get sucked into the air box below the filter. It may not help in the off road game, but its a thought. So if anyone reads this and has problems with thier astro van, maybe it might help them. Whens the next time you coming up alex? Oh and it looks like you're leaking brake fluid from your master cylinder.

I hope you have better luck than me ive done everything you talked about and still the water gets in. I think the toyota distributor really likes water.

i dont really see how it can get in at this point but we'll see

either kirkland or rieter. I'm not 100% sure, but i believe there is a drain on the backside of the distributer. Thats where we would tap into with the 4.3 distributers for the vacum tubing. its one thing to seal the cap but it may come up the back/bottom. so try sneaking a peak just in case.

The Landcruiser is diesel - it doesn't have an ignition system or anything electric in regards to the motor. So long as you keep water out of the cylinders, it's all good in the underwater hood.

People have fit 454's into these frame rails.

yes a straight 6 would only require minor sheetmetal clearancing probly cutting out the front end of the engine bay and maybe building a new tranny tunnel

nice mod idea al... personally I'd have plumbed the cap into the air intake but that's just me...
great videos RMA... in that suzuki one it looks like the driver could have used a snorkel too LOL...
