Snorkel head, pre filter or the "open" type?

Figured that the ABS plastic is going to be the way to go for the snorkel set up and have been looking at parts. So how much better is the pre-filter type (clear plastic, looks like it'd catch dust) over the regular open type. The reason I'm leaning towards the pre-filter is all the darn dust around here but am unsure if it'll flow as well as the open type.

Open type

Pre-filter type.

I was leaning towards the Donaldson "Top Spin" pre-cleaner for the fact that there's no bowl to clean out - there's a spinning thing inside that spits dirt out the side. In fact, I was just looking at these on ebay today, most seemed to be $50-$65. Just double check that you get one sized for your application - for my ~200hp 7MGE I figured I would need their 400CFM model with a 3" ID outlet

For where you live I'd go with a cyclonic pre-cleaner, or get one of the FJCruiser cyclonic precleaners that go inline before the air filter
