I change mine every 5000. its hard on the motor to change it at 3000. The new Cummins deisel engines are supposed to be changed every 10000!

It's wasteful and unecessary, but hard on the motor? How do you figure?

But will it make 200,000 doing 3K OCI?

Well if you change the filter too, it takes the engine a minute to fill the filter up and basically your running the engine without oil for a minute or 2. well thats what my Dad told me anyway. He is the best mechanic i know, he owned his own shop when he was 19 and had it till he was about 30 or so. He is 40 now.

Interesting...

I run Amsoil 5W-30 and try to change every 10K with a filter change every 5K.
My roommate (house owner) doesn't want me to change it here so I haven't been able to do it recently - I'm at about 11K, a little overdue.

sounds reasonable to me. but if you use toyota filters this will negate the damage because toyota filters use a technology called flowback (i believe that is the term). inside the filter is a sort of valve which keeps oil in the filter, and so when you start the motor there is oil there for it. the only time there is any "metal on metal" is the first time you start after changing the oil.

oh, and btw, i use castrol 5w30 and change at 3k

Clean oil is a good thing. I think the people on this site that either change every 3-4K miles using a good dino or change 7-8K miles using a synthetic are not going to have problems. It is the normal guy out there that changes at 10K miles using a low quality oil that I would not want his used car.

Interesting logic, except that it takes less than a second for the filter to fill up and during that time the engine is not running without oil, there's still a good bit of film coating everything. At least there should be if you are using good oil.

The engine will run for a moment with lower than usual pressure while the filter fills, but it runs with lower than normal pressure for a moment every time you start it.

I am not aware of ANY study that has found the moment it takes the filter to fill to have ANY impact on the longetivity of an engine.

Most major filter brands have anti-drainback technology built into them.

Unless you are using baby oil in your engine or it has sat un-run for years, there is never any "metal on metal" contact. There is a residual film of oil that coats the parts for a VERY long period of time. At start time, oil pressure is momentarily low, that is true, but if the oil pump is in good condition, the pressure comes up almost immediately.

i know this, thus the quotes, but metal on metal was implied by terky ("running the engine without oil")

drainback, thanx, that is the word i was looking for, and i did not know all major maufacturers used it.

so an additional question (sorry humanoid, tell me if you want me to post this in a different poll) would be: what oil filters do all y'all use?

4Runner, change every 5k on dino mobil oil with Toy filter

03 ES300, just got the oil changed at 7k miles, was gonna go 7500 on the dino but the dealer gave me a coupon for $9.95 so I got it changed early, the Pennzoil that was in their was still clean looking, now it has ExxonSuperflo

The dealer put a sticker in the car to remind me to change it in another 3k, I laughed, I wonder why Toyota recommends 5k or 7.5k changes but the dealers tell you to bring it in every 3k my father never believed in changing the oil so soon and he had vehicles that went way over 200k-300k and some that hit half a million

I like how the Germans do the synthetic with extended intervals, was reading something on a MercedesBenz forum and MBCanada owners are suing MB cause owners went on the extended intervals using dino oil and they cause premature failure to their engines, they didn't know they where suppost to use sythetic in their engines

I doubt that's going to fly - usually big corps. are pretty good with the small print.

I'm sure it was extended intervals with quality Mercedes Benz service*

Then again, you never know. There have been dumber things people have done

* Quality service means you spend your money with us and nobody else

Mercedes-Benz Canada Inc.

Class action status is being sought in a lawsuit filed against Mercedes-Benz Canada Inc. on behalf of Canadian Mercedes owners. The suit alleges that by recommending the wrong oil under a maintenance program, the company has caused millions of dollars in engine damage. The plaintiffs claim that the company recommended oil changes between 15,000 and 30,000 kilometres, however did not inform then that servicing should occur more frequently if they used conventional instead of synthetic motor oils.

Whats that mileage in US, sounds like MB themselves recommended the wrong oil but somehow I doubt that
