Getting Seat Belts to release

I recently picked up a set of retractable seat belts out of an 85 Standard cab that I would like to use in the backseat of my '81 Trekker. The belts functioned fine as far at retracting and extending at the U pull it junkyard. After taking them out I must have let them retract too far, they both have got about 4 feet of belt out side of the housing. I have tried pulling on it etc to get them to extend again, is there some trick to getting them to release again?

Thanks, Robb

You have to make sure the belt housing is level. It has a pendulum inside that locks it in place. When it is level it should release?
