did any Toyota's come with an offset rearend?
i've got a buddy with a rolling chassis sittin in his backyard. he says it's an 80's model toyota with a solid front end, an offset rear end, and a 22re. he said it's got a manual trans. and the tcase on it too.
does anybody know what this could possibly be? i find it weird that it has a solid front end and a 22re... i thought toyota started using ifs a couple years before fuel injection became standard?
any idea about the offset rear end?
i need to get out to his place and check it out... he said he'd sell me the front end if it's what i want. i can probly get it real cheap..... if it is a yota front end it's be a good donor for my sas in the near future.

I don`t know about the off set rear end, but in the middle of year in 1984 was when the 22RE came out in toyota trucks and 1985 was the last year you could get a 22RE and a solid front axle.

that's what i thought. he said he thought it was a 4runner, but i knew if it was a yota it had to be a landcruiser.... maybe the 22re was swapped in? i'll have to check it out. all he wants is the frame. he tried to sell it to me for $300 as is a couple months ago, but all i want is the front end.
now he just wants to keep the frame to make a huntin buggy.... i'll see if i can talk him way down
thanks guys

If it's a trekker/wolverine thing don't let him do it! those things are collector's items.
If the rear is offset it may have been some PO swap job... I recall reading an article years ago in a 4wd mag about some guy frankensteining a front axle on the rear to give him 4w steering for rock crawling and such... this thing may have been started as something like that and abandoned...

there's no body on the frame.... it's just a frame, motor, tranny/t-case, and axels.
and don't give me that "pics or it didn't happen" crap... i haven't even seen the thing myself yet, so
when i go to look at it i'll deffinatly bring my camera.

THe light duty LJ70 Land Cruiser "Bundera" came with a 22RE, but also Hilux/4Runner axles unfortunately. They were popular in South America IIRC.

ok... got some more info on this thing today....
after asking him a few questions he was able to tell me that it is a land cruiser chasis, he thinks it was an early 80s, but isn't 100% sure of the year. and the 22re came out of an 86 pickup, he said him and his dad swapped it in. not sure why, i guess the LC motor wasn't there, or didn't run??
a couple months ago he wanted to sell me the whole thing for $300, but all i want is the front end, but now he wants to keep the frame only....
i told him if the front end is something i will be able to use i will deffinatly buy it off of him. i'd like to get the t-case off of him, possibly the trans too. i know the tranny will bolt up to my 22re, but will the t-case bolt up to my stock 5spd?
so now my questions are is this a good front end for a SAS on my 92 pickup? what "should" the gear ratio be? is it stronger or weaker than a regular 85 and older pickup front end? is the axel the same width as a regular 4x4 pickup?

Well, landcruiser front ends arent leaf sprung.
They're all coil springs, so you'd have to do a much more in-depth swap.
The ride quality would be amazing though, and many users would give you mad props for being gutsy.
I gues the LC axles also have much more expensive parts, so be weary of that.

if it isn't leaf springs i don't want to mess with it.

The 80 series LC have coils/links, but I believe all the older ones were leaf sprung.
The axle is wider than a standard mintruck/4Runner - a better match for the IFS rear axle actually.
If I was doing all the fab work for a SAS, I would be PISSED the first time I couldn't make an obstacle due to axle wrap/wheel hop. Dont rule out links so fast - they're easier than the Webwheelers would lead you to believe and leaf springs are more difficult than they say.
