you'd need to find out the measurements. I think the dimensions of your truck should be about the same as a 1st gen runner.

It will fit but you might need to bob the top only to get it to match the length of the pick up

It can be done but you will be doing some serious modifing of the truck. The Gen 1 4runners were nothing more then the same year pickup with modifications done at the factory. In 1979-83 there was a company in Oregon called Trekker (Winnebago) that did a mod with the Toyota truck called the Wolverine. I actually saw one of these on the show room floor of a Puyallup dealership and was considering one for myself complete with Seattle Seahawk logo and matching paint just like the one on the sales floor. At the time a new Toyota truck listed for around $6500. The Wolverine option from Trekker added almost $4000 to the total cost of the truck.

You ordered your new Toyota truck from the local dealership, selected the color and options then selected the "Wolverine" package. The truck was then shipped from Portland Toyota receiving to Winnabago and they modded the truck. These were the first such mods and would lead Toyota to do their own version which became the 4Runner. Some historians believe Toyota had already begun their own versions and these may or may not have been trials authorized by Toyota. besides a little history of the Toyota Trekker, how does the involve serious modification to the truck? If anything, he'll have to modify the shell, not the truck.

I have been searching for this very thread! I would looooove to do this. I love the way 1st gen 4runners look but hate regular caps. so why not modify a 4runner top to fit, does anyone have any pictures of a truck like this?

The 4Runner top WILL NOT fit on an '86 truck without modifications to the truck bed and to the cab of the truck. The bed sides are higher than the quarters on the 4runner. you can chop the top of the bed sides at the bottom of the top rail.

I've seen more then a few trucks with 4runner toppers on them. Don't know what modifications if any would be needed to make them fit. I bet a tape measure would answer any and all questions.

Why not just a Softopper? Can-backs can be had used , but they haven't "restarted" for business yet. I have a Softopper on my '84 and I love it. You can roll the sides up and drive, or leave them down for protection.

I'm kinda wondering what the objective is...

Not trying to take this thread over or anything. I cant stand the looks of most aftermarket tops and love 4runner tops, I was just checking around to see if anyone on here has done it. But I do like the softoppers though.

My Gemtop was made specifically for an xtra cab yota. I think it looks pretty good for a topper.

Probably not made anymore but they are out there. Paid a whopping $75 for mine.

All it takes is patience.

"Will a 4runner top fit on a/my 86 pickup??"

Yes it will actually. i had an '84 single cab 2wd and when i flopped my 4runner i had to buy a new top, so i loaded the old one up in the pickup to haul away and just for giggles i tried it on and the length and width were an exact match! the only problem was there was a gap between the top of the cab and the topper (since the 4runner cab was open in the back) so you'd have to fill the gap somehow if you wanted it to be air-tight. i have a pic on my phone but its not a smartphone so i don't know how to upload it

I saw a guy on CL selling a 4Runner top and the pic he had of it was on his pickup and it looked like a perfect fit. You would definitely have to do something about the open front and back, but it could be done.
