So im new to the 4x4 game i bought a motorcycle and its fast so my car does nothing for me anymore. i decided to get a new toy. so i have an 87 22re pickup. it does great in the mud but i want it to be better i want that suspension to be able to twist up like u see in the videos of guys mudding and such. but i don't want nothing to outrageous in price but its reliable. I want to be able to drive it everyday but when i want get out there and hold my own in the pit and on the rocks and hills. What do i need to do that?

As of now no pics yet. and ive read and searched a little bit but like i said im not 100% sure what all i need or what good products are im a car guy looking at building a truck for a little toy not necesarrily going to always be boggin in the deep pits but i want somthing i can drive and have fun in everyother weekend and not get stuck or left behind bc i cant crawl over stuff.

You have an 87 i see are you just running stock suspension on in still or did you through an aftermarket on till you can afford sas

Like it says in my sig, it's lifted 4". Bracket in the front and chevies on blocks in the back. It's what was on it when I bought it and it's quite capable, but I have plans to ditch all that stuff at some point, with a SAS and real 4" lift springs and get rid of those stupid blocks.

If you're looking for more capability for a reasonable price maybe get some ball joint spacers for the front and add a leaf/ longer shackles for the rear to fit bigger tires and definitely get a locker! I have open diffs and it feels like that's what's limiting me the most. Hope that helps a little.

Oh yeah, and take off the sway bar. That will give you a little more front end travel.

Good thing to keep in mind. If you dont know what to do to the truck, as in what to modify, were to spend money, what you want the truck to be able to do, and what to expect.

Then you really have no reseon to change it at all. Figure those things out first and the rest will come alot easier, with our help of coarse.

haha i ride myself i have a cbr f4i lol. But like i said i have an idea of what i want i want a cheep reasonable priced trail style truck that has some suspension that can flex some so i dont get left behind i have faith with the stock truck everywhere else. Like ive said im jsut now geting in the game aswell and have alot to learn i dont know alot about the stuff i need or decent products for the 17 years of my life ive been cars and bikes with a little bit of trucks now im trying to expand my horizons so to speak

I was pretty happy with my 89 before I sas'd it. 33's a rear locker, 4.88 gears, and cut 2 inches out of my fenders. Adjusted T-bars up front, and 2 inch blocks rear.. And not very much money into it. It did awesome and went everywhere. Check it out in my sig below.

Step 3: kiss your bank account good bye while you mod it
Step 4: wheel some more
Step 5: buy another toyota for a DD since your 4x4 has become a dedicated trail rig..
Step 6: get better job
Step 7: repeat

Ok so you didnt have much trouble crawling over anything? and what do you mean gut 2 inches out like off the inside of the wheel well or what i couldnt really tell? and another question for anybody out there is there another maker out there (ford, chevy, ect.) that has the same bolt pattern for the wheels on the stock axles?

Wheeled awsome. I followed the radius that was there,, and took another 2 inches off of that all the way around. Then glued some flexi plastic c molding on the edges where I used tin snips.

1/2 chevy rims fit our trucks.

ok good to know now i need to find me a toyota i had a plan and it all worked out to trade my dad my car for the 87 we have but he changed his mind on me once he realized what i wanted to do he said it was to good of a truck so now my search has begun

I dont blam him. If this is your first yota, and your new at wheeling,, weeelll,, it might be a good idea to start with a thrasher. Thats what I did anyways. I Started off rallying old cars with no brakes on a track I built. Then got into wheeling. My first 4x4 was an 84 ext. cab nissan, and all it did was make me love toyota even more. It was a really nice nissan, but even though it was a nice nissan, it was a pile. No aftermarket support, pain to modify. I would have had to replace everything on it with yota parts to even make a good start.

But just cause your going to wheel somthing doesnt always mean its going to get destroyed. My 89 gets used a lot, I definitely wheel it. ANd its still in great shape, exo cage helps but you get the idea. If its setup properly and you have some seat time, you can have fun and keep it descent.
