What can I buy for my truck?

So I have sold some old stuff around the house to make some cash for my truck fund. I have about $300 to spend, and have no idea where to start.

My 86 truck is in good shape, but has many areas I would like to improve. What do you think I should work on first?

I was thinking about suspension, or tires? The tires I have now have good tread but are small at P225/75R15 mounted on steel wheels 15x? (I'd like to get alum.). The springs in the back seem like they could use some love too. They look kinda saggy. There are 100+ things that I'd like to do, but not sure of a good place to start.

Ideas?

Thanks,

-David

You should start with a ZUK mod if the rear is saggy. and im sure you could just trade your tires on craigs list.

Every truck needs a truck box.

Fuel

Other than that i vote for the zuk mod too. I just got done doing that on my 87' 4runner and the ride is so much better it's absurd. Also lifted the back up around 4 inches, so around an inch over stock. Not bad for 25 bucks! I did mine using third gen 4runner rear springs off of craigslist. I've got a writeup in the works if you're interested. AWESOME ride, great stance, NO modifications to the truck, and all you need to install is a broomstick .

Do you want a trail rig, daily driver, or showtruck? If the you want a trail rig I'd shoot for some good tires or a locker, or maybe some armor. If you want a daily driver or showtruck I'd spend some money on repairing/stopping the rust or maybe get a start on a new exhaust system to free the engine up a bit.

I think the suspension suggestions are a good idea. I replaced the rear coils on my runner and it proved to be a worthwhile investment.

Exactly, without telling us your plans for the truck, there is no good answer. You could spend money on the Zuk mod but if you plan on getting a bigger lift or some chevy 63s or whatever in the near future, then it would be a waste. Same with a locker if you never see the trails, we could tell you all kinds of things ranging from lockers to neon under lighting and spinner hubcaps and it all means squat until you tell us what you want from the truck.

Hey good point about the purpose of the truck. I am still trying to figure that out, but I have a rough idea. I was thinking about 25% crawler, 25% prerunner, and 50% daily driver.

Open to other ideas and suggestions too. I will be using it as a DD 90% of the time. Living in Northern Colorado, I think there are some good trails that are not too far though. I plan on using the truck to take the wife and kids on dispersed camping trips off of fire access roads, hunting trips, things like that. My main goal with the truck is to be able to get in and out without worrying about getting stuck, broken down, or not being able to get in to where I'd like to go.

I have an update on the truck too. I spent some time on Craigs List, and Yard Sales. Here is what I picked up:

Come-a-long(manual cable winch)
Hi-Lift jack
2 jack stands
emergency tow straps
4 SR5 Alum wheels (15x8) (in the process of restoring now)
And random things to repair rust (grinding wheels, Bondo, primer, rust remover, paint, etc.)

As for work on the truck I removed a VERY heavy rear bumper (for sale on CL). That brought up the back end nicely. I also pulled the spare (much easier then I thought) and put it in the bed. I also have the tail gate 100% prepped for Bondo, and paint. I should have the new wheels finished in a week or so too.

I thought about wheels, suspention, lockers, etc. In my reading It seems that with larger tires(even after re-gearing) power is a problem with the stock carburated 22r I have. According to Wikipidia, it only has 74hp... So that seems like a good place to dump some cash first. What do you guys think?

I have looked into building up the current motor (all stock at 185k mi), and a full swap. Any thoughts on that would be great. I was looking at a 3RZ swap? or maybe a 22RET swap?

Any thoughts or advice would be great. I also have about $850 saved up now, and about 3-400 worth of stuff for sale on Craig's List.

Thanks for the help!

If your concerned about lack of power after suspension and oversized tires id consider rebuilding the motor you have instead of a motor swap if its a carb motor id think about a nice cam and maybe a weber carb with a good header and exhaust . These little motors seem to respond very well to better breathing . That would probably cost a little more then the money you have saved up . You could always toss a cam and carb and good exhaust and run what you got until the motor blows then do a rebuild when its time . just my .02 either way im sure your gonna have fun
